Overview

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a qualified Technician Operations Technician II to support the safe and efficient operation of the state’s transportation system. This position is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical traffic control devices and lighting systems used to regulate, warn, and guide the traveling public. All duties are performed in accordance with WYDOT policies and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

Essential Functions
  • Repairs, builds, and maintains complex traffic-related electronic equipment.
  • Maintains and diagnoses hardware and software.
  • Replaces damaged parts; inspects and diagnoses specific problems.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, emergency repair and troubleshooting, modifications, utility locates, operation, software maintenance, and oversees initial operations.
  • May provide advanced training to less experienced specialists.
  • May assist or oversee contractors  installation.
  • Inspect, diagnose and document and repair roadside lighting.
Qualifications

Preferences / Agency Requirements:

  • Preference may be given to applicants who have a current Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements prior to employment.
  • Ideal candidates will have or be willing to obtain certifications in IMSA – Work Zone Safety, Traffic Signal Field Tech Level 1, Roadway Lighting Tech Level
    1. Have a good understanding of the NEC and MUTCD.
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Wyoming CLP permit within 30 days of employment.
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Wyoming Class A CDL within 9 months of employment
  • Must have the ability to obtain a certification to operate equipment as directed by WYDOT

Knowledge:

  • Basic hand tool use and knowledge.
  • Ability to read and use a digital multimeter.
  • Ability to perform the job safely.
  • Proper training in basic first-aid and CPR.
  • Knowledge of the NEC and MUTCD.
  • Knowledge of safely and properly working out of an aerial lift truck at heights of 40 feet.
  • Knowledge of handling electrical systems ranging from low voltage DC (12 to 24 volts) and AC (120 to 480 volts).
  • Knowledge of time management and making quality decisions in field work without on-site supervision.
Education and Experience

Education: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor s Degree

Experience:

  • 0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Technical Operations) with knowledge at the level of a Technical Operations Technician I
  • Alternatively, 3-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Technical Operations) with knowledge at the level of a Technical Operations Technician I

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Some agencies may require a valid Class C driver s license.
Physical Working Conditions
  • May work in extreme weather and involve heavy lifting.
  • Safely and confidently perform repairs of faulty electric or electronic equipment at levels up to 40  working height in a bucket or lift truck.
  • May be required to conduct repairs 24/7 in all weather conditions and during high-traffic volume situations.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasional overnight travel is required.

  • FLSA:
    Non-exempt
  • Pre-employment drug screening and/or physical, and random drug and alcohol testing may be required.

  • Emergency work calls may be required at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
