Position Overview

Responsibilities
  • Design and design check of complex steel and concrete bridges, overhead sign structures, concrete box culverts, retaining walls, and other highway-related structures, ensuring adherence to AASHTO specifications and public safety.
  • Produce organized engineering design calculations, written correspondence, and track project activities using various computer applications.
  • Review designs for clarity, organization, and completeness.
  • Review fabricator’s designs and associated construction drawings.
  • Approve design‑related work by affixing a Professional Engineering Seal.
  • Check structural details for conformance with design, accuracy, office standards, and completeness.
  • Assist Principal Engineer with project administration and construction support.
  • Attend project‑related meetings, coordinate activities with internal programs, outside agencies, and the public, and provide technical assistance.
  • Author reconnaissance and structure selection/rehabilitation reports, special provisions, and project‑related correspondence.
  • Perform field inspections.
  • Provide technical assistance to field personnel.
Qualifications

Knowledge and Competence:

  • Principles, application, and interpretation of structural engineering design and theory, ensuring uniformity and compliance with AASHTO design specifications, program policies, and department standards.
  • Engineering fundamentals relating to highway geometrics, hydraulic design, and geotechnical engineering.
  • Drafting principles, practices, standards, and office policies related to structural detailing.
  • Proficiency in computer applications for structural design and office automation.
  • Understanding of national bridge inspection standards and bridge element level ratings.
  • Understanding of WYDOT project/plan development procedures and project flow charts.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering.

Experience: 1–2 years of progressive engineering work experience.

License: Professional Engineer (PE) license required at time of hire;
Wyoming PE required within one year of hire date.
