General Description

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking an Assistant Pavement Design Engineer to join our team in Cheyenne and help shape the future of Wyoming’s transportation system. This position offers the opportunity to work on meaningful infrastructure projects that directly impact the safety, durability, and efficiency of roadways across the state.

Description and Functions

As an Assistant Pavement Design Engineer, you will work under limited supervision to support the development of pavement surface designs and rehabilitation strategies aimed at preserving Wyoming’s roadway infrastructure. You will conduct materials analyses during both the design and construction phases of projects and assist in resolving surfacing design and materials‑related construction issues. The role also involves investigating innovative pavement practices, contributing to research initiatives, and supporting the development, construction, and implementation of research projects and recommendations.

In addition, you will develop technical specifications, prepare reports, and deliver presentations to share findings and recommendations with a variety of audiences.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assists in the development of surfacing designs, including reconstruction and rehabilitation projects in accordance with the Wyoming Pavement Structure Design Guide, using Pavement Design Guides and Software.
  • When necessary, conducts life cycle cost analysis on multiple alternatives to aid in the selection of the appropriate surfacing design or rehabilitation strategy.
  • Assists in the assemblage of project construction history, including existing surfacing types/depths and current pavement condition.
  • Collaborates with the procurement of surface cores/base samples with the field investigation crew and the Pavement Management Engineer.
  • Assists in developing the “Materials and Rates” for the project plans.
  • Communicates with Resident Engineers throughout WYDOT to determine the needs of individual projects.
  • Evaluates historic mix design data on surfacing sources throughout the state of Wyoming.
  • Evaluates and recommends solutions for material‑related issues during construction.
  • Evaluates, develops, and assists in the implementation of improved, innovative materials and construction techniques by investigation and research; develops work plans, reviews and monitors testing and construction, writes evaluations, and tracks product performance.
  • Assists the Accreditation Engineer to ensure the Material Program’s compliance with AASHTO’s Re:

    Source Accreditation Program (including R18 requirements).
  • Serves as the secondary liaison with AASHTO, coordinating and facilitating all onsite inspections, audits, and accreditation communications as directed by the Accreditation Engineer.
  • Collaborates with the Principal Engineers overseeing laboratory sections to ensure the maintenance of the laboratory’s Quality Management System (QMS), including, but not limited to:
  • Personnel qualifications
  • Equipment inventory and calibrations
  • Inspection records
  • Proficiency sample program (PSP) submittals and responses
  • Documentation in alignment with AASHTO R18
  • Directs activities and provides guidance to crews/teams when compiling preliminary data and coordinating field investigations, and conducts research.
Qualifications Knowledge:
  • Skills in current principles of engineering, analyzing and interpreting data; statistical knowledge; technical writing; decision-making; analyzing new technology; computer applications.
  • Knowledge of roadway, materials, and surfacing design;
    Materials Program and Department policies, procedures, and personnel rules; applicable testing procedures; material sources and specifications; construction practices.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work; communicate effectively internally and with other programs and entities; interpret specifications and plans, and work independently.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Ability to research, compile, and present technical presentations.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods used to develop and conduct research projects.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree (in Engineering).
