Position: Project Geologist 2026-00526

General Description

This position provides the frontline presence of mining regulatory enforcement, regulation, and mining permit administration for the state and the regulated mining community in southeast Wyoming. It is a member of the Land Quality Division, District 1 mining regulation team, subordinate to the Land Quality Division (LQD), District 1 (D1) Supervisor. The role supports the overall team by administering mining permits and providing geological knowledge to analyze proposals and inspect contemporary mining and exploration projects.

Essential Functions
  • Conduct review and evaluation of complex surface, underground, or in‑situ mining or mine exploration proposals, including mine volume analysis.
  • Analyze groundwater characteristics and hydrogeochemistry related to projects.
  • Assess mined land reclamation proposals.
  • Administer assigned mine permits and authorizations, evaluating compliance with regulations.
  • Analyze impacts of mining activities on public health, safety, and the environment.
  • Document findings in detailed technical reports.
  • Provide program information and interpretation to the public, regulated community, and government agencies.
  • Inspect mining operations to determine compliance.
  • Write inspection reports, notices of violation, compliance orders, and respond to public complaints.
  • Participate in the development of guidance documents and regulations.
  • Travel and conduct field work as required.
  • Ensure completion of projects within defined time constraints.
  • Produce detailed, well‑written technical reports and division correspondence.
Qualifications PREFERENCES:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biological or Physical Science.
  • Direct experience in mineral exploration through drilling and mining of non‑coal minerals such as uranium, lithium, trona, and gold.
Knowledge
  • Basic knowledge of mineral exploration and surface mining projects.
  • Understanding of natural resources sciences for analyzing projects, including application of solid and plane geometry, trigonometry, and basic GIS/GPS use.
Education

Minimum:
Bachelor’s Degree in Geology or Geotechnical Engineering.

Experience

1–2 years of progressive work experience in Geology at the level of a Geologist II.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Professional Geologist License (PG) or Professional Engineering License (PE) at time of hire. Wyoming PG or PE required within one year of hire date.

Physical Working Conditions
  • Inspection of mineral exploration and surface mining sites requires over‑road travel and the ability to drive on paved highways and improved gravel roads.
  • Ability to negotiate uneven terrain on foot to traverse sites safely.
  • Most inspections occur during the growing season (April–July); occasional shoulder season work in inclement conditions may be required.
