Bridge Inspector 3 – Cheyenne, WY

General Description
Join the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) as a Bridge Inspector 3 in the picturesque city of Cheyenne! In this pivotal role you will conduct detailed inspections of bridges, overhead sign structures and high‑mast light poles, adhering to the Federal Highway Administration’s National Bridge Inspection Standards. Your work will directly impact public safety and the efficiency of our transportation system.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in performing routine, fracture‑critical and special inspections of existing, recently constructed and damaged local and state‑owned bridges and related structures.
  • Assist the lead inspector of a bridge inspection team.
  • Prepare for inspections by reviewing structure files, identifying components and accounting for special considerations.
  • Ensure inspections accurately and completely reflect structural and functional conditions, and are completed in accordance with WYDOT policies and FHWA standards.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports with photographs per FHWA guidelines.
  • Use non‑destructive testing methods to assess damage as required.
  • Record measurements and take photographs for load ratings and repair strategies.
  • Use computer‑aided drafting to convert field sketches into detailed plans for engineering evaluation.
  • Prepare other related data for transmission to local government officials.
  • Verify the completeness of detailed sketches made by others.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of National Highway Institute (NHI) Course No. 130055 – Safety Inspection of In‑Service Bridges.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of National Bridge Inspection Standards, bridge elements, and WYDOT procedures and policies.
  • Knowledge of drafting principles and practices related to structural detailing.
  • Proficiency with computer‑aided drafting software (Microstation), word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to operate inspection equipment and to climb and access structural components for close inspection.
  • Ability to produce clean, legible drawings in the field and convert them to CADD details.
  • Ability to convey accurate descriptions of structural damages verbally and in written format, and to direct other team members.
Education and Experience
  • Associate’s Degree (typically in Civil or Environmental Engineering).
  • 0–2 years of progressive work experience in transportation occupational groups, with knowledge at the level of a Field Data Collection and Lab Analysis Technician; or
  • 2–4 years of progressive work experience (same field) as a substitute for the education requirement.

Physical Working Conditions
  • Ability to stand for long periods.
  • Ability to climb fences, use a bucket or lift truck for extended periods, traverse uneven or slippery terrain.
  • Ability to access structural elements in confined spaces.
  • Capability to perform inspections in inclement weather, road closures and during limited visibility.
  • Requirement to lift 50 pounds.
  • Extensive travel required.
