OverviewThe Wyoming Department of Corrections is seeking a detail‑oriented and dependable Mailroom Clerk to support daily mailroom operations within a correctional facility. This role is integral to maintaining the safety and security of the institution by sorting, screening, and processing inmate mail, identifying potential contraband, and ensuring all correspondence is handled accurately and efficiently. The position also manages mail tracking, operates specialized equipment, and provides administrative support while helping maintain an organized, secure, and well‑run facility.

- Process, open, and scan incoming and outgoing inmate mail to reduce contraband introduction and promote safety.
- Accurately receive money and handle contraband identification and processing.
- Operate mailroom machinery and/or data center printers.
- Train other employees on areas of expertise as needed.
- Process and track outgoing inmate packages.
- Retrieve and deliver all mail to and from the Post Office, including institutional mail.
- Inform inmates and staff of changes within the Postal Service, such as postage rates and international mail procedures; operate and maintain the postage meter.
- Record all incoming and outgoing legal mail and process regular mail.
- Coordinate mail activity with other areas, scheduling delivery times to maintain institutional good order and security.
- Handle contamination, biohazards, and other health concerns when dealing with labs.
- Scan for contraband and other prohibited items; process inmate and staff mail while maintaining daily contact with inmates.
- Identify and flag relevant information related to inmate management and share with appropriate staff.
- Input data from PSI and social history into the database for inmate family members.
- Act as subject matter expert in specific mailroom functions, including mail‑related computer and database programs.
- Serve as Mail Services Supervisor in their absence.
- Participate in initiatives that promote a positive work environment.
- Preferences: Mailroom experience or experience in a correctional setting.
- Knowledge: Computers, inmate funds program, court decisions and DOJ policy, inmate movement and correctional operations.
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: 0–1 year of progressive work experience (typically in business) at the level of a Mail Clerk I; or 1–2 years as an alternative.
- Certificates: Valid driver's license.
- Must pass a background/reference check and drug screen.
- Position is non‑exempt under FLSA.
- Lifting 50 pounds, withstand weather extremes.
- Exposure to hazardous materials, bodily fluids, chemicals, and potential explosives.
- Driving delivery vehicles and operating large mailroom equipment.
- Walking on cement floors regularly; stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching occasionally.
- Reaching regularly; typing/repetitive motion frequently.
- Pre‑service training required.
