The Asphalt Plant Manager / Superintendent is responsible for the overall leadership, safety, production, and operational performance of asphalt manufacturing operations. This position oversees one portable asphalt plant and three stationary plants, ensuring efficient production, consistent quality, equipment reliability, and compliance with environmental and safety requirements.
In addition to plant management, this role functions as the Plant Superintendent by coordinating production with paving operations, planning portable plant moves, directing field setup and teardown, managing plant personnel, and ensuring operations meet project schedules and cost objectives. This is a full‑time position requiring travel between plant locations and overtime during peak construction season.
Responsibilities ManagementManage and oversee daily operations for one portable asphalt plant and three stationary plants. Supervise plant operators, loader operators, and ground personnel; provide leadership, coaching, and performance management. Manage plant setup to ensure proper stockpile management, traffic flow, and efficient material handling. Teach, coach, and develop plant personnel in a constructive manner. Oversee that adequate inventory levels of aggregates, liquid asphalt, fuel, and additives per plant.
QualityAssurance
Ensure asphalt mixes are produced in accordance with approved mix designs, specifications, and quality standards. Ensure compliance with all company safety policies and OSHA/MSHA requirements; conduct regular safety meetings, inspections, and corrective actions. Maintain compliance with environmental and air quality permits, including emissions monitoring, reporting, and recordkeeping.
PerformanceMonitor plant performance, production rates, fuel usage, and material consumption to maximize efficiency and control costs. Track and report daily production, operating costs, equipment utilization, and key performance metrics. Actively participate in required training and stay current on industry standards, plant technology, and best practices.
ProductionCoordinate asphalt production schedules with paving superintendents, project managers, and dispatch to meet project demands. Plan, organize, and supervise portable plant mobilization, setup, relocation, and teardown. Support project teams by aligning plant operations with construction schedules and project priorities.
CommunicationCommunicate professionally with internal teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and regulatory agencies.
MaintenanceSchedule and oversee preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs to minimize downtime.
Requirements ExperienceMinimum 10 years of experience in asphalt plant operations, production management, or related heavy civil materials operations. Experience in a supervisory or superintendent-level role. Experience coordinating portable plant moves and field setup preferred. Experience with plant control systems, automation, and production tracking software preferred.
KnowledgeStrong knowledge of asphalt plant operations, components, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Understanding of asphalt mix designs, material properties, and quality control requirements. Knowledge of environmental regulations, air permits, and emissions compliance for asphalt plants.
SkillsStrong problem‑solving skills and ability to make operational decisions in a fast‑paced environment. Ability to manage multiple plant locations and prioritize competing production demands. Ability to manage operating costs, production efficiency, and equipment utilization. Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
QualificationsValid driver's license and ability to travel regularly between plant locations. Consent to pre‑employment screening, Motor Vehicle R cord request, and drug testing.
