General DescriptionThis half-time position provides maintenance and janitorial care for historic buildings and landscapes, reproduction displays, contemporary buildings, indoor and outdoor interpretive displays, indoor and outdoor restroom facilities, waste removal, construction/maintenance projects and/or contracts, roads and sidewalks, water and sewer systems, trails, picnic and playground areas, landscaping and lawns, and other infrastructure resources at Fort Phil Kearny, Fetterman Monument, Wagon Box Fight Site, and Connor Battlefield.
This position is also available to aid in the same tasks at the Trail End and LX Bar State Historic Sites and/or other sites in the system, as needed. These duties include reporting to the Fort Phil Kearny Superintendent and Headquarters, working with Superintendents and staff at other sites in the SPHST system as the need arises, maintaining consistent records on all maintenance tasks and schedules and overseeing building projects.
Additionally, the position assists the Superintendent in the construction and installation of interpretive signs, exhibits, and programs for visitors – including some work in Visitor Services/Bookstore/Fees. Supervisory duties will include oversight and scheduling of seasonal employees and volunteers.

Essential Functions- Maintenance of grounds, including the grounds at Fetterman Monument and Wagon Box Fight Sites.
- Water/mow lawn and interpretive areas. Manage weeds. Keep trails passable. Maintain parking lots. Remove trash. Repair the fence when needed.
- Perform all maintenance, security, and janitorial duties at the Interpretive Center and the outbuildings, including structures and signs at Fetterman Monument and Wagon Box Fight Sites.
- Monitor and maintain the water and sewer systems, and the security system.
- Perform carpentry, plumbing, painting, concrete work, and HVAC work.
- Maintain and repair the vehicles, camper, and other implements and tools.
- Manage the reporting for vehicles assigned to the site.
- Maintain the mowers, weed eaters, fuel supply, and hand tools.
- Repair equipment as needed.
- Perform preventive maintenance as needed, and enter the information into the digital maintenance database.
- Collect and send the required water tests.
- Schedule and oversee the work of seasonal employees. Assist with the hiring process.
- Assist visitors in the bookstore by taking fees, selling site merchandise, narrating site history, giving tours, answering phones, and assisting with special programs.
Preference may be given to applicants with three or more years of experience in building and grounds maintenance and repair, equipment repair, and excellent customer service skills.
Knowledge- Knowledge of the maintenance, repair, and operation of small and large equipment, tools, and implements.
- Knowledge of the care and development of landscaping, grounds, and range management, including weed control and fence maintenance.
- Knowledge of building maintenance, water systems, and electrical.
- Knowledge of exhibit construction and basic carpentry.
- Knowledge of scheduling and overseeing seasonal employees.
- Basic computer skills, including Good Mail, Google Suite, and the Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent customer service skills.
High School Diploma
Experience0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in parks maintenance)

Physical Working Conditions- Must be able to drive vehicles and operate cleaning and grounds maintenance equipment.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs with or without accommodation.
- FLSA:
Non-Exempt - This is a half-time position. Work is guaranteed at no more than 20 hours per week. However, if budgets allow, the incumbent could work more than half-time for brief periods, during specific times of the year, during special events, or for extended periods. This in no way changes the half-time nature of the position.
