POSITION SUMMARY

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) serves as a front-line health care personnel who adheres to regulatory standards while providing comprehensive, skilled care to patients across the lifespan (neonate to geriatric) based on knowledge/skills and in accordance to the providers plan of care.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Clinical
  • Under the direct supervision of a licensed provider, the CMA provides clinical care and associated tasks, as assigned.
  • Participates in pre-visit planning for scheduled patients. Communicates the patient needs and recommended treatment to the patient's healthcare team.
  • Performs intake procedures by obtaining chief complaint/purpose of visit; vital signs (TPR, B/P), pulse oximetry, height, weight, etc. along with any appropriate screening exams reporting any abnormal findings to RN/NP/MD/PA
  • Assist health providers in examination of patients by explaining procedures; positioning the patient; prepping patient with antiseptics; assembling, arranging and draping instruments; and gathering supplies.
  • Administers therapeutic measure in collaboration with the medical plan of care and within scope of practice; informs the patient of prescribed procedures, prepares the patient, assist during procedures as needed.
  • Obtains bacteriologic specimens such as sputum, and clean-catch urine specimens. Instructs patients in proper collection of samples and prepares samples for analysis, e.g., labels specimen tubes.
  • Performs less complex dressing and treatments without assistance. Assist with cleaning, irrigating, and dressing complex wounds; documents and informs RN of non-healing wounds. Performs skin care measures. Removes uncomplicated sutures or skin staples as assigned by charge nurse or physician or mid-level provider and assists with minor surgical procedures.
  • Administers oral medication, performs subcutaneous and intramuscular injections and routine vaccines under direct supervision of a Physician, Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner
  • Performs venipuncture of blood draws, within the CMA's scope of practice
  • Performs EKG's notifying NP/MD/PA/DO of any urgent findings immediately
  • Performs blood glucose testing and records results using a glucometer. Performs other point of care (POC) tests as indicated by laboratory policy. Complies with laboratory requirements for glucometer accuracy and record keeping. Reports abnormal/out of range results to the RN/NP/MD/PA.
  • Performs cleaning and sterilization of instruments
Administrative
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team to ensure optimal care is provided in a quality environment to patients and families.
  • Assist team members as needed without prompting. Contributes to team outcomes by providing assistance as needed.
  • Performs the secretarial/clerical aspects of patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Prioritize and process physician orders accurately and within designated time frames; seeking assistance as needed.
  • Assists coworker by mentoring or guiding them during new or changing work assignments. Able to teach MA students and beginning learners.
  • Participates to ensure the unit is stocked (i.e. medications, supplies, etc.) equipment is checked (i.e. cleaned, equipped for use) and work stations are kept clean and uncluttered.
  • Instills appropriate conduct of behavior and communication among team members that promotes professional relationships of co-worker, peers, and patients
  • Leads in a proactive, customer-responsive manner. Addresses customer needs and/or requests; solicits feedback and makes applicable adjustments to accommodate customer
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Current Certified Medical Assistant certificate through accredited medical assistant program
  • Current BLS certification
  • Effective communication skills

Preference will be given to qualified Eastern Shoshone tribal members, then other qualified federally recognized Indian tribal members and then other qualified candidates.

  • Veterans who meet the minimum qualifications and provide documentation of an honorable discharge (DD214) from any branch of military service are entitled to receive preference points during the interview process.
