Optometric Technician –
AEG Vision – Wyckoff, New Jersey, USA
$15.00/hr – $25.00/hr
Job DescriptionOptometric Technicians work in conjunction with the optometrist to perform patient care activities, conduct pre‑exam and post‑exam duties, conduct specialty testing, and maintain the doctor’s appointment schedule in a professional, pleasant environment.
Responsibilities- Perform preliminary evaluation of patients prior to OD exam (dilation, topicals, diagnostic medications, Optomap, etc.).
- Conduct verbal interview with patients to determine medical issues and reasons for visit.
- Enter patient information into Electronic Health Records (EEHR).
- Assist ODs in caring for patients efficiently and according to schedule.
- Instruct patients on medical care as prescribed and schedule follow‑up appointments.
- Discuss LASIK with patients and identify those interested based on information forms.
- Schedule referral appointments with ophthalmologists, diagnostics, and other specialty referrals; complete necessary paperwork.
- Maintain patient records/files in compliance with company, federal, and state policies (HIPAA).
- Respond to patient telephone inquiries regarding medication, treatment, or concerns and refer to OD as needed.
- Complete accurate coding of procedures for payment collection.
- Perform diagnostic testing with specialty equipment (OCT, visual field, pachymetry, retinal camera, etc.).
- Correspond with doctor offices regarding patient and insurance referrals.
- Support OD with patient education per optometrist instructions.
- Document medical findings and communications in EMR; assist with related clerical duties.
- Participate in practice meetings and projects as requested.
- Ensure optimal OD utilization through pre‑appointment confirmation, daily scheduling, patient recalls, and outreach partnership.
- Call no‑show or canceled patients to reschedule appointments.
- Perform contact lens insertion/removal classes and manage contact lens trial inventory.
- Handle end‑of‑day responsibilities, including opti‑schedule wrap‑up and checklist.
- Recommend efficiencies and process improvements for quality, cost savings, or profitability.
- Perform other duties within the practice as requested and time‑allowing.
- High School diploma or GED.
- PC skills (MS Office, Windows, Word processing).
- Team‑oriented mindset; ability to work collaboratively.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience evaluating patients for eye exams and dispensing related medications.
- Familiarity with eye‑treatment medical terminology.
- Maintaining patient records/files in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
- Industry certification (CPO, CPOA, CPOT) preferred but not required.
- Ability to communicate, exchange information, use necessary equipment, and move about the office.
