The Chair for Functional Materials in Medicine and Dentistry (FMZ) is part of the newly established Institute for Functional Materials and Biofabrication, which is supported by the Faculties of Chemistry and Pharmacy as well as the Faculty of Medicine. The chair's activities are also integrated into the research building “Center of Polymers for Life”, which provides state-of-the-art infrastructure for research at the FMZ.
The research at the chair, which is internationally recognized in the field of biofabrication, is interdisciplinary and includes not only the synthesis of materials but also the development and application of new 3D printing technologies. Scientific projects are carried out within the framework of third-party funded research (EU, ERC, DFG) and in collaboration with industrial partners.
This job posting refers to a position within the EU project Daedalus. The project aims to enable regeneration of the colorectal mucosa and submucosa using an in situ 4D bioprinting system. This system will include bioink formulations with patient-derived cells and 4D shape transformations to replicate the crypt-like structure of the colorectal mucosa. FMZ’s contribution primarily involves the synthesis of new polymers as responsive bioinks to support the mimicry of mucosal morphology.
- Core task:
Synthesis and characterization of novel polymers intended as base-materials for bioink formulations, with a focus on optimizing their printability and cytocompatibility for use in 4D bioprinting applications - Participation in third-party funded projects, active collaboration with project partners, presentation of results at project meetings, and preparation of reports
- Supervision of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral students, as well as publication of results in scientific journals and presentation at national and international conferences
- A completed PhD or equivalent degree in chemistry with a solid background in polymer synthesis for biomedical applications (ideally in bioink development)
- Experience in scientific research, ideally in a related project
- Strong interest in applied research
- Enjoyment of working in an interdisciplinary, international, and motivated team
- Challenging, diverse and evolving area of responsibility
- Attractive salary according to TV-L incl. annual special payment
- Training and Continuing Education
- Retirement Pension Plan
