Band 6 Sleep Apnoea Nurse Practitioner. This post is a secondment until 28/06/2026 due to maternity cover. Only current staff employed by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board will be considered. Applicants must obtain permission from their current line manager before applying.
Role SummaryThe Sleep/NIV Clinical Nurse Specialist works across BCUHB within the ventilation services specialty. The post holder acts as practitioner, educator, consultant, researcher, leader/change agent and care coordinator/case manager to improve clinical excellence and patient outcomes.
Main Duties- Provide expert nursing knowledge in the management of patient care within the ventilation service of specialty practice, working with patients, families and other health professionals to provide timely nursing care to optimise outcomes where there may be barriers to understanding.
- Manage a caseload of patients through diagnosis and management.
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate own and others' care.
- Prescribe advanced evidence‑based nursing therapeutics, pharmacological/non‑pharmacological interventions, diagnostic measures, equipment, procedures and treatments to meet patient, family and group needs.
- Guide and support others in ventilatory speciality in assessment, clinical decision‑making, implementation, evaluation and documentation of care.
- Provide leadership, role model and guide others in nursing practice.
- Support the Ventilatory Service through specialist clinical practice, performing screening procedures and diagnostic tests, including setting up patients for ventilatory assessments and commencing CPAP and non‑invasive ventilation with titration of pressures and mask fitting.
- Demonstrate critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential- Registered with the NMC
- Post‑registration experience in respiratory or a relevant field
- Working towards a relevant postgraduate degree to be completed within an agreed timeframe
- Diploma level training or demonstrable CPD in respiratory management
- Obtained or working towards a relevant postgraduate degree in respiratory care
- Demonstrated ability to support the development of nursing standards and quality initiatives
- Teaching, mentoring and assessing skills
- Involvement in research that has changed nursing practice
- Module or qualification in respiratory management
- Experience and credibility as a professional resource in the respiratory speciality/practice area e.g., link nurse
- Demonstrated ability to articulate evidence‑based nursing advice to a multidisciplinary team
- Post‑registration practice within the defined scope of respiratory speciality/practice
- Skills in nursing leadership (ward/team/caseload management)
- Ability to assess complex patient needs in respiratory practice
- Work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team using evidence practice in respiratory specialty
- Initiate health promotion activities to encourage beneficial health behaviours
- Professional leadership and role model, inspiring, motivating and developing others in respiratory/sleep practice
- IT skills (e.g., Microsoft Word)
- Health‑board clinical databases (e.g., PIMS, Myrddin, WPAS)
- Apply specialty assessment skills, initiate appropriate clinical interventions and evaluate outcomes in respiratory practice
- Current issues for nursing and health in Wales
- Government policies, codes, guidelines and legislation affecting respiratory conditions (asthma, COPD, TB, ILD)
- Current nursing professional standards and codes
- BCUHB current vision, goals and objectives
