OrganizationThe Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Wrangell, Alaska.
What you will be doingUnder the supervision of a biologist, this position serves as a field crew leader for the Stikine River Salmon Stock Assessment projects assisting in coded wire tagging of juvenile Chinook salmon. The person in this position will lead additional field staff in camp setup and breakdown, capturing juvenile salmon using manually-deployed beach seines, collecting biological data, and implanting coded wire tags using a Mark IV machine.
The incumbent will train crew members in sampling and safety protocols, delegate daily camp maintenance, and communicate daily with project leaders.

This position assists with work supporting the Pacific Salmon Treaty stock assessment program on the Stikine River, providing information to manage salmon stocks cooperatively with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Tahltan First Nation.
The person in this position will be part of a team of highly motivated technicians and biologists that are mission-driven and thrive conducting field work in remote locations. Crucial data is collected in accordance with Pacific Salmon Treaty directives, while staff members gain valuable technical experience on a transboundary river in Southeast Alaska.
The working conditions you can expectField camps consist of primitive cabins dispersed along the river shore in the Stikine River valley, set in the remote Southeast Alaska Coastal Mountain Range, near Wrangell. Seasonal staff share living spaces and use open outboard‑driven skiffs to access work sites. Staff conduct work at various sites on the lower river in open boats, capturing wild salmon, collecting and recording data, in various weather and river conditions.
- Travel in open outboard-driven skiffs on salt water and on rivers will be required daily.
- Travel in small aircraft may also occur.
- This position will require travel into Canada.
- This position will require proficiency with a Mark IV coded wire tagging machine.
- This position will require safe capture, handling, and release of live fish specimens.
- This position will require working in inclement weather and conditions where biting insects may be present.
- This position will require the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
- This position will require working and living at a remote field camp with limited facilities.
- This position will require strong leadership and logistical planning skills.

Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, installation, uses, repair, and maintenance. - Vehicle Operation:
Knowledge of procedures for operating motor vehicles, including cars, trucks, or watercraft.
A valid driver's license is required.
Must be able to legally carry and effectively use firearms.
First Aid/CPR. For those not already certified, training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee.
High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.
