The Department of Art in collaboration with the Alaska Native Studies Department within the University of Alaska Anchorage is hiring a two-year term Assistant Professor position in Alaska Native Art. The Department of Art is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and prepares students to use their artistic abilities to make a difference in society. A comprehensive multi-studio approach encourages independent thinking, strengthens creativity, and develops knowledge of the critical and historical aspects of art. Alaska Native Studies provides an in-depth perspective on contemporary Alaska Native societies, languages, cultures, history, politics, art, tribal governments and our for-profit as well as our non-profit corporations.

To thrive in this role, applicants should possess the following:
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to teach core and specialized courses in the department’s curriculum.
  • Demonstrated potential to support and mentor students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success.
  • Knowledge of innovative teaching practice.
  • Advanced level knowledge of Alaska Native culture, arts and traditions.
  • Knowledge of studio organization and operation.
  • Ability to communicate with and enlist the help of elders as needed to enhance programming.
  • Specialization in two or more Alaska Native Art making techniques.
Preferred Experience:
  • Evidence of effective teaching across modalities, including online or hybrid formats.
  • Experience with curriculum development, program assessment, or course design.
  • Familiarity with or experience in grant writing and project management.
  • Experience teaching or working in an open-access, public university.
  • Evidence of interdisciplinary collaboration or applied/community-engaged scholarship.
  • Experience or demonstrated potential in contributing to interdisciplinary programs.
  • Knowledge of regional issues or communities relevant to the institution’s mission (e.g., Circumpolar North, Alaska Native communities, rural engagement).
Minimum Qualifications:

MFA in Art or closely related field by the time of appointment.

Disciplinary expertise in Alaska Native Arts

Evidence of potential for excellence in teaching at the college/university level

This position is located on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus in Anchorage, AK.
