Department Details
Responsibilities- Review prescriptions to assure accuracy, ascertain needed ingredients, and evaluate suitability; provide information and advice regarding drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and proper medication storage.
- In a retail/community pharmacy setting, review, interpret and dispense both prescription and non-prescription medication to patients; respond to prescription issues and advise providers on selection, dosage, interactions and side effects of medications.
- Counsel patients on medication prescriptions including proper administration, possible side effects, expected response, storage, and any other questions posed by the patient.
- Monitor the health and progress of patients in response to drug therapy.
- Learn and utilize new technology as the profession of pharmacy evolves; provide oversight and clinical supervision for pharmacy staff.
- In medical center or institutional settings, review and interpret provider orders, provide drug information, assist in problem solving, and deliver other aspects of pharmaceutical care.
- Perform duties such as unit dose dispensing, IV admixtures, outpatient prescriptions, navigating the electronic medical record, compounding, and working with automated dispensing devices.
- Assess age-related pharmaceutical needs across neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients; ensure appropriate pharmaceutical care.
- Follow established regulations and standards governing the practice of pharmacy; may act as a shift supervisor under supervision by department managers.
- Provide oversight and clinical supervision for pharmacy services and pharmacy support personnel.
- Participate in pharmacy services across areas such as acute care, surgery, neurology, cardiology, pediatrics, oncology, infusion services, intensive care, general medicine, dialysis, transplant, antimicrobial stewardship, and medication reconciliation; may involve decentralized or centralized clinical functions.
- In a retail/community pharmacy setting:
Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy. Thorough knowledge of drugs and their actions; knowledge of state and local regulations. - In a medical center or institutional setting:
Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy. Thorough knowledge of drugs and their actions; knowledge of state and local regulations. Hospital experience or residency preferred. - License must be in good standing by the State Board of Pharmacy in state(s) of practice and/or possess multi-state licensure privileges as required by position.
