Overview
Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship - Critical Care at UMass Memorial Health. The program is a 12-month fellowship preparing Physician Assistants (PAs) and Acute Care Nurse Practitioners (ACNPs) for a career in critical care medicine. The fellowship includes clinical and didactic curricula with rotations in medical, surgical, trauma, and neurological ICUs, protected academic time, simulation-based learning, and journal clubs.
Position SummaryThe PA or NP fellow practices under the general supervision of a physician. Scope of practice includes taking medical histories, performing physical examinations, ordering/interpreting tests, formulating diagnoses and treatment plans, prescribing medications, assisting in procedures, and counseling patients and families under physician supervision. Fellows must participate in the fellowship program and meet its academic requirements as determined by the Program Director and Medical Director.
MajorResponsibilities
- Attend didactic and simulation sessions every other week
- Attend Journal Clubs and present patient case studies
- Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests
- Conduct in-depth health histories and physical examinations
- Analyze data to determine health status and differential diagnoses
- Develop and implement care plans with physicians and patients
- Manage therapeutic interventions and perform advanced procedures
- Reassess and modify treatment plans to achieve medical and health goals
- Document and communicate care outcomes and findings to determine plan effectiveness

For Nurse Practitioners
- Master’s degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program (preferably ACNP/AGACNP)
- Eligible for Massachusetts NP license
- Eligible for Board Certification by the ANCC or AANP
- Eligible for Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA
- BLS and ACLS
For Physician Assistants
- Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program
- Eligible for Massachusetts license (Physician Assistant Board)
- Eligible for certification by NCCPA
- Eligible for Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA
- BLS and ACLS
- Develop a foundation of Critical Care knowledge in a supportive learning environment
- 25 didactic and simulation-based learning experiences over one year
- Mentorship by experienced Critical Care APPs
- Cross training in Medical and Surgical ICUs
- Elective rotation in the Cardiac ICU
- FCCS, ENLS and a 1-day POCUS workshop
- Comprehensive health, dental and vision insurance
- Relocation bonus of up to $5,000
Hiring Range: $68,369.60 - $. The final offer may vary based on experience, skills, qualifications and internal equity considerations.
