Overview
Community Legal Aid (CLA) is the non-profit legal services program providing free civil legal assistance to low-income and elderly residents of Central and Western Massachusetts. CLA has over 180 dedicated, talented staff working across multiple offices. Our core work includes effective client-centered advocacy and robust outreach to and partnerships with our client communities. CLA seeks a Pro Bono Coordinator who will help administer its Private Attorney Involvement (PAI) volunteer programs.
CLA oversees volunteer-based programs that provide opportunities for private attorneys from law firms and corporations to volunteer their time to provide legal assistance to CLA’s client communities.
The coordinator will work in CLA’s Worcester office and will assist clients and attorneys participating in CLA’s PAI programs. The coordinator will conduct client intakes and administer weekly in-person and remote lawyer-for-the-day programs and pro bono clinics; refer pro bono cases to volunteer attorneys and provide ongoing administrative support to volunteers as needed; open and close cases in a timely manner and maintain contemporaneous records in our case management system;
engage in outreach and recruitment of volunteer attorneys; and assist in the coordination and presentation of volunteer training events. The coordinator will also help with the preparation of periodic grant reports.
The candidate should have access to reliable transportation and be willing to travel periodically to different parts of CLA’s five-county service area. Weekly lawyer-for-the-day programs and routine clinics require attendance outside of normal business hours. Additionally, in an effort to recruit and engage with volunteer attorneys, the candidate will also be required to attend meetings and events outside of normal business hours, including early morning and after hours.
Qualifications- Experience coordinating volunteer projects preferred but not required.
- Strong organizational, communication, computer, and interpersonal skills are needed.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to balance the demands of multiple projects and responsibilities.
- Comfort in navigating social events and building professional relationships with colleagues and volunteers required.
- Familiarity with civil legal services, the practice of law, or the Massachusetts legal system preferred but not required.
- Fluency in Spanish a plus.
- Bachelor’s degree from 4-year college; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Access to reliable transportation and willingness to travel periodically within CLA’s five-county service area.
- Weekly lawyer-for-the-day programs and routine clinics require attendance outside normal business hours; occasional early morning or after-hours meetings/events may be required.
The starting salary for this position is $53,140, which is based on a union scale and adjusted upward depending on experience to a maximum of $84,340. CLA offers a very generous benefits package that includes 401(k) with employer-paid contribution; low-cost health insurance (medical, dental, and vision) for employees and their dependents; paid leave (4 weeks vacation, 3 personal days, 12 sick days, and 13 holidays);
and relocation stipend. CLA has a hybrid work environment and requires advocates to work in their assigned office at least three days per week.
