Responsibilities
  • Responsible for applying the risk management process of identifying risks, setting priorities, and mitigating the risks through elimination, prevention, reduction, and transfer.
  • Identify incidents with potential for liability and financial loss, using loss prevention monitors, including occurrence (incident reports), focused occurrences and patient complaints.
  • Conduct investigations of incidents/adverse events with possible quality of care, systems, regulatory and/or potential liability questions and concerns.
  • Review daily occurrences through the online occurrence reporting system to identify significant events and patterns for risk management and quality improvement interventions.
  • Serve as a resource and consultant for physicians, residents, patient care representatives, and other staff regarding risk management, loss control, and loss prevention strategies; conduct independent clinical department risk assessments and present findings to department leadership.
  • Plan and execute Root Cause Analysis (RCA) in a timely manner, including staff interviews and preparation of RCA documents; monitor progress on action item follow-up with senior leadership, physicians, and the Patient Safety Committee.
  • Coordinate and conduct investigations of potential/actual litigation cases with claims adjustors and defense counsel as appropriate; prepare observation cases and make reserves recommendations as appropriate.
  • Identify and communicate potential regulatory reports (e.g., DPH, Joint Commission, Board of Registration in Medicine) and staff of Regulatory Affairs; primarily responsible for preparing BORM SQR, BORM Annual and Semi-annual reports and Med Watch reports; participate in DPH reports with Patient Safety/Regulatory staff.
  • Provide weekly risk management orientation to new employees.
  • Proactively present educational presentations to physicians, nurses, and other employees focusing on patient safety, adverse medical event management, quality improvement and loss prevention strategies to reduce risk and liability exposure.
  • Develop and revise policies and procedures specific to Risk Management and other areas as required.
  • Ensure concerns regarding product alerts and product recalls are addressed using the ECRI electronic Alert Tracker system.
  • Travel to member campuses on a weekly/daily basis as required (UMass Memorial Medical Center, Marlborough Hospital, Health Alliance-Clinton Hospital campuses, Harrington and CMG locations).
  • Position qualifications License/Certification/Education

    Required:
    1. Bachelor's degree in healthcare field.
    2. Current unrestricted driver's license.

    Preferred:
    1. Master's Degree in health-related field or MBA.
    2. RN license.
    3. Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management certification (or eligibility) or other Risk Management certification.

    Experience/Skills

    Required:
    1. Minimum of 5 years clinical experience.
    2. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in fundamentals of quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
    3. Proven ability to function independently and communicate effectively at all levels of an organization.
    4. Strong organizational, analytical and computer technology skills.

    Preferred:
    1. Experience in Healthcare Risk Management.
    2. Experience in an academic medical center.
    3. Database experience.
