Under the direction of the appropriate licensed clinician, and in keeping with unit‑specific standards, a Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides patient care to meet the personal needs and comfort of patients and assists members of the healthcare team. To become a PCT II a caregiver must meet the full competencies outlined by the Nursing Professional Practice.
I. Major Responsibilities- Provides clear, timely communication to the RN regarding observations and changes seen in patients (e.g., changes in skin condition, vital signs, and/or mental status).
- Provides constant observation of high‑risk patients as assigned by the Resource Nurse or designee.
- Participates in the development and maintenance of a safe environment; uses interventions to de‑escalate patients and, if unsuccessful, participates in restraints per training and education.
- Assists patients with daily living activities such as personal hygiene, ambulating, meals and nourishment.
- Assists in moving, lifting, positioning and transporting patients using proper safety techniques and body mechanics.
- Maintains patient safety by performing patient safety checks, using fall‑prevention devices/strategies as directed, and following Restraint Policy standards with restrained patients.
- Records vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse ox) and measures patients’ height and weight.
- Performs EKGs, Point‑of‑Care tests and bladder scanning per hospital standards; collects, labels, and prepares specimens for lab transport.
- Performs phlebotomy in certain locations.
- Performs unit‑specific procedures (e.g., battery changes for telemetry units, checking equipment status, cleaning equipment between patients, storing supplies).
- Assists RN or Licensed Independent Practitioner with treatments and procedures (preparing patients, setting up equipment/supplies, positioning patients, providing emotional support, and cleaning afterward).
- Observes and records oral food and fluid intake; sets up tube‑feeding solutions, refills bags as directed, records outputs from Foley catheters, ostomy appliances, or drainage systems; performs ostomy care per instructions.
- Demonstrates sensitivity and responsiveness to patients’ needs, acting as information source and building positive rapport.
- Provides respectful, culturally and age‑appropriate communication with patients, staff, family, visitors and others.
- Replenishes patient and unit supplies and equipment.
- Requests assistance from identified resources when more direction is needed.
- Keeps current with hospital and unit changes by reading communication boards, bulletin boards, posted notices and responding to UMMHC e‑mails regularly.
- Can precept new Patient Care Technicians.
- Complies with established department policies, procedures, and objectives.
- Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
- Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
