Bancroft School seeks a full-time Assistant College Counselor to join our collaborative and dynamic team starting in August 2026, to support the Director of College Counseling. Working closely with the Director of College Counseling and the Head of Upper School, the Assistant College Counselor ensures that the college counseling needs of all of our students are met. The Assistant College Counselor role requires independent judgment, discretion, and confidentiality.
Strong organizational and communication skills and a professional customer service-oriented demeanor are essential to this position.
- Counsel and support a class of approximately 55 seniors as they navigate the college application and financial aid process, while maintaining a personal caseload of approximately 25 students.
- Guide and review seniors’ applications and essays, follow up with colleges, and help students evaluate their final college choices.
- Write recommendation letters for personal caseload.
- Actively contribute to all office programs, presentations, and initiatives; plan and run workshops as well as college counseling classes for juniors and seniors.
- Lead and/or co-lead project areas within the office.
- Develop and maintain professional relationships with students, parents, and Bancroft colleagues.
- Travel to regional and national professional conferences and to individual colleges and universities.
- Maintain relationships with college admissions professionals; host college representatives on campus.
- Help maintain the college counseling office’s electronic publications and materials database.
- Assist in organizing, proctoring, and administering standardized testing on campus (PSAT’s and AP exams).
- Meet the ethical standards of the college admission profession as articulated by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC).
- Have a high degree of cultural competency and an ability to respond with care and effectiveness to the needs of a diverse population of students and families.
- Have a willingness to participate in and partner with colleagues on cultural and curricular initiatives.
- Have an understanding of and love for Upper School students.
- Have the ability to learn and become proficient with emerging technologies.
- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s Degree preferred.
- Three to five years in college counseling and/or selective college admissions preferred.
- Strong writing and editing skills; a level of comfort coaching students through the writing process.
- An understanding and appreciation for where students are developmentally throughout their secondary school experience.
