Overview

The Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital (WRCH) operated by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (DMH) is seeking an experienced Physician to support the Physician Specialist by providing comprehensive medical care. The Physician will lead, supervise, and direct medical and clinic staff, ensure continuous medical coverage through staff schedules, and collaborate with psychiatrists and other clinicians to deliver continuous and holistic patient care, including diagnosis, management, and referrals.

This full-time, 40/week position (Monday–Friday, 8:30am – 5:00pm) emphasizes leadership, supervision, patient care, collaboration, emergency services, quality assurance, and staff development to support high-quality medical services and the well-being of patients and staff.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership, supervision, and direction to the medical staff and clinic staff.
  • Ensure continuous medical coverage by participating in medical staff schedules.
  • Collaborate with psychiatrists and other clinicians to deliver comprehensive and continuous patient care, including diagnosis, management, and referrals.
  • Oversee and provide emergency medical services to employees.
  • Review and revise policies, develop practice guidelines, and implement disease management protocols to improve clinical care.
  • Develop and monitor Quality Assurance (QA) indicators to meet regulatory requirements and participate in the hospital-wide performance improvement process.
  • Conduct admission history and physical examinations for patients.
  • Order and interpret laboratory tests, EKGs, and X-rays as needed.
  • Perform routine evaluations of patients and address difficult cases through consultation; perform minor surgical procedures when required.
  • Respond to emergency medical calls and establish doctor-to-doctor contacts with external hospitals.
  • Contribute to staff development activities, including ongoing educational initiatives.
Required Qualifications
  • Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution.
  • Current and valid registration as a physician under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine.
  • Thorough knowledge of clinical medicine based on experience and training.
  • Ability to identify and respond to emergency situations throughout the campus.
  • Capacity to refer patients/staff to appropriate facilities as needed.
  • Experience working effectively with patients with chronic illness.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of recovery-oriented practices and person-centered approaches.
  • Proven experience in a leadership or supervisory role within a medical setting.
  • Knowledge and understanding of healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and quality improvement processes.
  • Strong clinical skills with the ability to provide comprehensive patient care and make informed medical decisions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and communicate with patients and staff.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in utilizing electronic medical record (EMR) systems and other relevant medical software.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and staying updated on advancements in medical practices and evidence-based medicine.
  • Proficient usage of Microsoft Office products including Word, Teams, and Outlook.
  • Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.
  • Prior experience with the adolescent population.
About Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital (WRCH)

Located on over 20 acres in Worcester, Massachusetts, WRCH provides inpatient services to 290 adults and 30 adolescents, including a Deaf Inpatient Mental Health Service program for 10 patients. WRCH is part of an integrated network of mental health services and offers intermediate and long-term inpatient care for individuals with serious mental illness, as well as specialized court-ordered evaluations.
