The building-based substitute teacher maintains classroom discipline and carries on classroom procedures as if they were the regular teacher. They maintain responsibilities and duties of the regular teacher, including bus duty and playground supervision. In the teacher’s absence, the substitute provides students with appropriate learning activities designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth while following any lesson plans or instructions left by the classroom teacher.
They enable students to develop competencies and skills for successful functioning in society.
- Rotate into various teaching positions in the school on a daily basis and possibly throughout the day.
- Implement teacher lesson plans and administrator directives with fidelity and efficiency.
- Communicate with classroom teachers and, if necessary, principal regarding expectations for student work, behavior, and lesson execution.
- Ensure the physical and emotional safety of all students.
- Ensure the teacher’s absence does not cause an interruption in classroom instruction.
- Gain familiarity with district curriculum and resources.
- Attend and contribute to staff meetings and professional development activities.
- Perform supervisory duties as assigned (such as lunch, bus, or recess duty).
- Assist in development of curricular materials as assigned.
- Abide by state statutes, school committee policies and regulations.
- Attend meetings and perform duties as assigned by principal or their designee.
- Take all necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
- Report all suspicions of abuse and/or neglect to DCYF and the principal.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding students and staff personnel information.
- Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of the Department.
- Be flexible with job assignments as needed.
- Remain current on instructional practices in education (e.g., instructional technology).
- Assume responsibility for other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned.
- Bachelor's Degree.
- Ability to work with a multidisciplinary team to support students across the curriculum.
- Ability to accept and implement directions.
- Must be able to relate well to teachers, students, other staff members, and parents.
- Must be a person of professional competence and personal integrity.
- Experience in a school or community setting working with children (preferred).
- Second language fluency or competency (preferred).
- Experience working in an urban setting (preferred).
- Experience working with Google products and implementing remote lessons as needed (preferred).
The school environment can be high energy and moderately noisy. Before/after school, recess and field trips may require time outdoors in inclement weather. Frequent and prolonged standing, significant walking, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting are required. Occasional lifting of 35 pounds or more may be necessary. The substitute must maintain emotional control under stress.

Day 46‑90: $150/day;
