Description
The Department of Public Works is seeking a candidate for this full-time, 40 hour per week position. Under supervision, the technician is responsible for performing skilled mechanical work in maintaining vehicles and mechanical equipment for the Village. Additional tasks as well as overtime may be assigned when needed.
The Village's fleet consists of vehicles from various manufacturers (Ford, Chevy, International, and others) using both gas and diesel engines. The fleet includes police department squad cars and pursuit vehicles, light to heavy duty trucks, sport utility vehicles, along with specialty equipment such as aerial lift trucks, a crane arm truck, backhoe, end-loader, and sewer flush truck. Additionally the Village has rolling stock, including walk-behind saws, hydraulic/gas/electric pumps, golf carts, chain saws and other small engine equipment.
The Village provides all tools and equipment necessary to perform the duties of this position.
Examples of Duties
RESPONSIBILITIES INLCUDE:
- Plans, carries out and evaluates preventive maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment, either personally, or through outside vendors.
- Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools.
- Repairs brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and related systems.
- Cuts and welds metal and performs body touch up and related work.
- Changes and repairs tires and tubes.
- Evaluates status of mechanical equipment and vehicles, and performs or schedules needed repairs.
- Conducts various analyses and inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems to determine the most cost-effective means of maintenance, repair or replacement.
- Purchases equipment, parts, and supplies used for vehicle and mechanical system maintenance.
- Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.
- Assists in the preparation of bid specifications for vehicles and mechanical equipment.
- Maintains records, prepares reports and other specialized maintenance records of equipment and mechanical equipment.
- Serves as part of the general maintenance function of the department on an as needed basis. These duties may include, but not be limited to, snowplowing, water main repair, sewer maintenance and other duties as assigned.
- Overtime is often required, especially during periods of inclement weather.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from high school diploma or GED equivalent plus some specialized training in mechanics, maintenance management, or a closely related field.
- Three (3) years of related experience. The selected candidate will demonstrate thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics, ability to follow effective preventive maintenance programs and skill in the operation of tools and equipment. The ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with employees, supervisors, vendors and the public is essential.
- A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required, or the ability to obtain one within a period of time designated by the Village.
Supplemental Information
The anticipated hiring salary for this position will be $31.90 hourly ($66,352 annually) to $33.33 hourly ($69,326 annually) dependent upon qualifications. The current salary range for the position is $31.90 - $46.26 hourly ($66,352 - $96,220 annually).

This position will included in the Teamsters Local 700 Bargaining Unit.
