Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Technician / Mechanic Job Purpose
Maintains equipment operation by completing inspections and preventive maintenance requirements under limited supervision; correcting vehicle deficiencies; making adjustments and alignments; keeping records. This includes onsite and off-site equipment maintenance.
Technician / MechanicJob Duties
- Minimum of 4 years in Heavy Duty Mechanic.
- Determine vehicle condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests; identifying worn and damaged parts.
- Keep equipment safely available for use by completing preventive maintenance schedules; installing components and part upgrades; controlling corrosion; completing winterization procedures.
- Correct vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts or systems, such as power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics; complete machine shop operations; make adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction units.
- Verify vehicle performance by conducting test drives; adjusting controls and systems.
- Maintain vehicle appearance by cleaning, washing, and painting.
- Perform welding, grinding, and fabrication maintenance functions.
- Maintain vehicle records by annotating services and repairs.
- Keep shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshoot breakdowns; maintain supplies; perform preventive maintenance; call for repairs.
- Keep supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
- Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical and regulation publications.
- Understanding of electrical diagnostic including CAN/BUS system, 12
VDC. - Computer diagnostic pertaining to heavy equipment engine, transmission and body functions.
- General knowledge of hydraulic principles and functions.
- Knowledge of heavy-duty air brake systems and foundation parts including suspensions and steering systems.
- Ability to assess the importance of repair and prioritize from greatest priority (safety, potential to break down on route, spill) to least important.
- Understanding of heavy-duty preventative maintenance inspections.
- Ability to diagnose and complete any repair work in the field by use of service truck.
- Ability to work out doors and inside in all N. California seasons.
- Must have skills to communicate in written form and read manuals, TSB’s, schematics.
- Must have teamwork skills and work closely with co-workers and at times communicate with customers.
- Must place safety first and follow all company safety rules.
Must be proficient regarding:
Tooling, Supply Management, Mechanical Inspection Tools, Technical Understanding, Attention to Detail, Dependability, Thoroughness, Verbal Communication, Documentation Skills, Inventory Control, Job Knowledge, Environmental Compliance & Safety Policy. Physical requirements include: pushing, pulling, dragging, climbing, lifting items up to 75 pounds, no limitations while kneeling, bending, laying, working in all physical body positions, and capable to work in all weather conditions.
