Overview

The County of Yolo is recruiting for one regular, full-time Occupational Therapist position within the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA), assigned to the California Children’s Services (CCS) Program. Spanish bilingual preferred.

The Medical Therapy Program (MTP) is a CCS program providing medically necessary physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), and Medical Therapy Conference (MTC) services to children and young adults with disabling conditions, primarily from neurological or musculoskeletal disorders. The Medical Therapy Conference (MTC) is an interdisciplinary, family-centered process that includes the client, caregiver/family, and a team of professionals to assess needs, develop treatment recommendations, and coordinate services.

The CCS MTP serves eligible children and young adults from birth through 21 years of age with MTP–eligible conditions, including conditions such as cerebral palsy, neuromuscular diseases, musculoskeletal conditions, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, spina bifida, brachial plexus injuries, and acquired injuries/illnesses including burns and traumatic brain injuries. The CCS MTP operates through a partnership between county health departments and the California Department of Health Care Services, with local education partners, and most services are provided in Medical Therapy Units (MTUs) typically located on public school sites in accordance with CCR, Title 2.

The Occupational Therapist delivers a full range of OT services to physically handicapped children, including evaluation, planning, and treatment. The OT works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to meet therapy needs of CCS MTP clients. The mission of the CCS MTP is to maximize quality of life for special needs children through ongoing assessment, treatment, and consultation with the child, family, and community.

Responsibilities
  • Provide occupational therapy services for physically handicapped children.
  • Confers with physicians to determine treatment type and extent; institute therapy as prescribed.
  • Administer diagnostic and prognostic tests or adapt activities as therapeutic treatment.
  • Teach self-care and functional activities and instruct in proper body mechanics.
  • Assist parents in understanding and handling physically handicapped children.
  • Prepare materials and maintain equipment used in treatment.
  • Coordinate treatment plans with other therapists to facilitate a comprehensive team approach.
  • Adapt functions to therapeutic requirements and conduct therapeutic exercises.
  • Provide guidance to patients and parents on braces and home equipment construction and care.
  • Cooperate with professional staff to secure carry-over in treatment and training.
  • Maintain records of work performed and patient progress; prepare required reports.

Licenses: Possession of a valid Certificate of Registration as a Physical Therapist issued by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California or current registration with the National Registry of Occupational Therapists.

Knowledge of: accepted methods of physical therapy and treatments to increase joint motion range, muscle strength, coordination, adaptive activities as therapeutic exercises, design and use of special equipment and orthopedic appliances, skeletal anatomy, kinesiology, and therapy treatment objectives; understanding the effects of therapy on patients and families.

Ability to: instruct in therapeutic exercises, explain objectives to patients and parents; adapt functions to therapeutic needs; use tact with patients; cooperate with staff to secure treatment carry-over; prepare accurate case reports; follow oral and written directions.
