Note: This recruitment may establish an eligibility list for future vacancies and determine placement for an upcoming vacancy in the Water Pollution Control Facility. Initial position and salary will be based on prior work experience and valid certificates.
The PositionTo collect and examine water, wastewater, stormwater and related materials. Performs a variety of standardized and complex tests and analyses of such samples. Maintains and calibrates laboratory equipment, prepares glassware, mixes reagents and media. Prepares reports, performs special studies, analyzes results and collaborates with outside labs.
ESSENTIAL CONTEXT The purpose of this recruitment is to fill a current vacancy in the Water Pollution Control Facility, and to establish an eligibility list for future vacancies. Initial position and salary will be based on experience and certificates.
Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate will have prior experience in a laboratory or related position, familiarity with operation of a Water Pollution Control Facility, and coursework in chemistry, microbiology, mathematics and related fields. The candidate should be organized, flexible, hardworking, capable of clear written and oral communication, detail-oriented, have strong time management skills, maintain accurate records, be a cooperative team player, and bring a positive, professional attitude.
LaboratoryTechnician Levels
Laboratory Technician I (entry-level):
This classification generally involves narrower duties, learning to perform routine lab testing and equipment maintenance. Lab Technician II provides lead supervision and training as needed to Technician I.
Laboratory Technician II (journey level):
Performs complex testing and analyses, calibrates and maintains sophisticated equipment, and provides lead direction to Technician I. Supervisory oversight is provided by the Laboratory and Environmental Compliance Manager.
- Laboratory Technician I – Collects and prepares samples, conducts standard physical, chemical and biological analyses, performs calculations, maintains logs and reports, performs routine testing, and maintains supplies. Regular attendance is required.
- Laboratory Technician II – Performs all Technician I duties plus prepares reagents and media, handles outside lab samples, supports quality assurance for certifications, assists with NPDES-related analyses, and supports scheduling and maintenance as directed. Ensures proper maintenance of equipment.
- Maintains laboratory cleanliness, adheres to safety procedures and SOPs, and performs related duties as assigned.

Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent with related college coursework.
Experience:
One (1) year in a laboratory or related position is desirable.
License & Certification:
California Driver’s License required at hire;
