Position: Hardware Reliability Engineer (Starlink Aviation)

Overview

Hardware Reliability Engineer (Starlink Aviation) Space

X is actively developing technologies to enable human life on Mars and to deploy Starlink, the world’s most advanced broadband internet system. As a Hardware Reliability Engineer on the Starlink Aviation team, you will be responsible for ensuring reliability and quality of our aviation products through design, manufacturing, test, and in the fleet.

Responsibilities
  • Design and execute long-term reliability tests during initial product development and qualification.
  • Partner with design engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure manufacturability and process reliability for flight hardware.
  • Develop, implement, and validate test and inspection processes for new and existing products, ensuring objective criteria and alignment with design and reliability goals.
  • Execute projects to improve reliability in collaboration with design, software, test, manufacturing engineering, and production teams.
  • Investigate anomalies and failures in test, production, and the fleet to identify root causes and implement mitigating actions to reduce risk and improve reliability of structural and electrical systems (phased-array, Wi-Fi, harnessing, power supply PCBAs).
  • Drive corrective actions to prevent factory escapes of defective hardware.
  • Drive systematic process improvements to mitigate potential failure modes.
  • Contain suspect or non-conforming product and provide guidance to quality inspectors, technicians, shop supervisors, and engineers for quarantining and rework.
  • Support shop floor continuous improvement and advancement of an autonomous production system through standard rework/repair guides and streamlined inspections and processes.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline.
  • 1+ years in a manufacturing, quality and/or design engineering role (student project team or internship experience qualifies).
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills with a passion for innovation and reliability in cutting-edge technology.
  • Programming experience in Python, C, or SQL with emphasis on data analysis and automation.
  • Experience with statistical process control and design of experiments in high-volume production.
  • Ability to think creatively and solve complex problems with minimal supervision, individually or as part of a team.
  • Background in electrical engineering.
  • Knowledge of quality tools (Lean, MSA, DOE, SPC, PFMEA, control plans, root cause analysis, corrective action, etc.).
  • Experience in fast-paced, iterative design environments in consumer electronics, mobile devices, medical devices, aerospace, or automotive industries.
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and offsite as needed.
Compensation & Benefits

Pay range:

  • Hardware Reliability/Level I: $100,000 - $120,000 per year
  • Hardware Reliability/Level II: $115,000 - $135,000 per year

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is part of total rewards including potential long-term incentives (stock or cash), discretionary bonuses, and Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Benefits include medical, vision, dental, 401(k), disability and life insurance, paid parental leave, vacation, holidays, and sick time where applicable.
