The Prince William County Department of Social Services is seeking a qualified candidate for the Senior Human Services Caseworker position on the Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigations Team. In this role, you will respond to allegations of abuse and neglect, primarily involving children, while also supporting vulnerable adults and youth in foster care when needed.

About This Role

In this role, you will investigate allegations of abuse and neglect and assess imminent danger to ensure the safety of children and vulnerable adults. You will work closely with families, community partners, and internal teams to identify risks, develop safety plans, and connect clients to the services they need. You will supervise subordinate staff and, in the absence of the Program Manager, provide team leadership, including staffing cases and overseeing casework.

You will be part of a team that values professionalism, compassion, and collaboration. Supervisory guidance, peer support, and ongoing training are provided to help you manage complex cases and continue developing your skills.

Typical Tasks
  • Conducting interviews to determine whether allegations of abuse or neglect are substantiated
  • Developing and implementing appropriate safety plans
  • Responding to crisis situations and coordinating services to stabilize families
  • Referring clients to community resources and ensuring they receive needed support
  • Transferring cases to appropriate teams for continued monitoring and follow-up
  • Working with the Assistant County Attorney’s Office on cases set for adjudication
  • Preparing documentation and testifying in court when required
  • Responding to appeals and meeting required deadlines
  • Participating in family partnership meetings
  • Accurately documenting all casework in the case management system
  • Serving as a lead worker, providing guidance to junior caseworkers
Minimum Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree in social work or other human services field; OR a bachelor’s degree in any field accompanied by a minimum of two years of appropriate and related experience in a human services-related area.

Preferences
  • Three or more years of experience in the following areas:
  • Conducting child and adult protective services investigations
  • Preparing court documents and/or reports
  • Assessing family needs and coordinating appropriate services
  • 2 or more years of experience supervising and/or mentoring subordinate staff
  • Strong Knowledge of VDSS CPS Manual/Guidance
Special Requirements (if Applicable)
  • All DSS staff are required to provide emergency human services work, including staffing emergency shelters in the event of a community disaster.
  • Candidates must pass criminal history, child protective services and DMV background checks.
  • Resource/foster parents for youth in the Prince William foster-care program may not be employed by the Prince William Dept of Social Services. Resource/foster parents for youth from other localities are welcome to apply.
  • Staff in this position must possess a valid driver’s license and be eligible to drive for work.
  • Staff in this position may periodically be required to work at night and on weekends to cover emergencies. Additional compensation is provided.
