Summary: Performs duties necessary for the accurate calculation of wages, maintenance of records, and distribution of payroll wage and tax reports. Acts as a resource and provides responsible guidance to Payroll Specialists. In addition to the foundational expectation of having required knowledge to audit, analyze, and verify payroll and payroll supporting documents for accuracy, as well as make necessary adjustments or corrections using established procedures, Senior Payroll Specialists are distinguished from the Payroll Specialists by performing advanced technical calculations and adjustments.
Senior Payroll Specialists are expected to make sound independent judgments within established limits and have some lead responsibilities.
- Acts as a subject matter expert and/or resource to others around payroll processing
- Demonstrates thorough understanding of Company policy and can effectively articulate, explain and reinforce Company policy to managers and employees
- Demonstrates an understanding of Company Data Governance policy as it relates to Payroll and effectively adheres to, and can articulate, explain, and reinforce the policy clearly and concisely
- Demonstrates an understanding of HRIS and Payroll data dependency, relationship, and data integration
- Demonstrate understanding of basic Department of Labor and Wage and Hour Laws and can effectively articulate, explain and reinforce these regulations in alignment with Company policy to managers and employees
- Analyzes and responds to complex matters requiring comprehensive knowledge of payroll policies and procedures; authorizes exceptions to the policy within defined limits
- Research and interprets a variety of complex technical information in response to pay, employee, and/or employer taxation inquiries
- Authorizes, reviews, and/or enters payroll transactions and related data; completes appropriate forms to adjust wage/salary account funds or to correct/balance a special situation
- Research, analyze, and resolve difficult or advanced technical pay, tax, and time problems or questions presented by co-workers, management, staff, and/or outside agency representatives
- Recommends or participates in the development of new procedures and policies related to payroll operations; assists in coordinating approved changes within the payroll system
- Compiles financial, tax, and payroll reports for both internal and external purposes with minimal guidance or supervision
- Acts as liaison with management and staff in answering questions, providing alternatives, and assisting decision-making
- Coordinate, schedule, and conduct training sessions for management and staff to explain and/or update information regarding payroll policies and procedures, state and federal regulations, and laws
- Ability to utilize clear, concise, effective verbal or written responses to inquiries, complaints, or problems and make necessary adjustments of a non-routine nature
- Coordinates and interacts with federal and state agencies on specialized issues pertaining to employee wages and taxes
- Initiates payroll processing quality control reviews, identifies training issues and/or problem-prone processes to ensure optimal efficiency and error-free operations
- Knowledge of payroll principles, practices, regulations, and procedures
- Knowledge of basic accounting practices and procedures
- Knowledge of basic excel formulas, VLOOKUP, Pivot tables
- Knowledge of applicable state and federal payroll and related tax regulations, legislation and guidelines including, but not limited to garnishment, child support, levies, subpoenas, Visa taxation, State reciprocities and general U.S. taxation
- Knowledge of the practice, methods, and techniques of process improvement
- Skilled in evaluating and analyzing technical payroll activities
- Skilled in both verbal and written communication
- Skilled in preparing detailed reports through utilization of Company's HRIS and Payroll systems
For this position, the expected base pay range is $80,000-$87,000 annually. Actual compensation will be determined based on job-related factors, including relevant experience, skills, education or certifications, and geographic location, consistent with applicable laws and company policy.
