Job Summary
The Tax Experienced Senior, State and Local Tax - Unclaimed Property (SALT UP) applies industry knowledge and experience to clients by advising on the tax implications and other accounting matters that affect business objectives, with emphasis on unclaimed property compliance and consulting. This role leverages tax and/or accounting skills in a consultative capacity, handling sporadic data sets, analysis, and modeling. The SALT Experienced Senior Associate, Unclaimed Property, will work with leadership to recommend course of action, identify methods of complying with unclaimed property statutes and regulations, manage projects, present to clients and states, coordinate compliance, audit defense and other engagements, manage client expectations and deliverables, support marketing, networking and business development, and apply evolving unclaimed property policies to engagements.
The person will partner with Core Tax and Audit Partners, Directors, and Senior Managers to provide SALT expertise to clients.
- Research
- Identifies complex situations requiring research, outlines issues and sources
- Analyzes researched facts and sources to produce a detailed report
- Develops relationships with in-state and out-of-state Department of Tax (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). of Revenue (DOR) personnel, Department of Treasury, etc.
- Routinely stays current on relevant unclaimed property statutory, regulatory and case law changes
- Unclaimed Property Compliance
- Obtains and manipulates client data for annual escheat returns
- Uses FSI Track, BDO Global Portal and other systems for data gathering
- Imports data into FSI Track and prepares returns
- Identifies appropriate exemptions/deferrals
- Performs reconciliations on data gathered to data reported
- Composes responses to notices from state authorities
- Assists with due diligence letter processing
- Assists with client payment processing
- Provides assistance with exam support
- Communicates routinely with clients and UP team members
- Unclaimed Property Consulting
- Drafts memorandums, opinions and other documentation on various escheat issues
- Works with Unclaimed Property leadership to determine escheat planning processes
- Participates in developing policy and procedures, addressing internal controls
- Represents clients on unclaimed property audits, mitigating exposures and assisting with best practices
- Represents clients on voluntary disclosures mitigating exposures and assisting with best practices
- Identifies gift card planning opportunities and implementation
- Assists UP leadership with client interviews, onsite visits, workplans, etc.
- Compiles and organizes general ledger detail, banking records, and other data for escheat items
- Prepares and reviews scheduling decks of sporadic data into Unclaimed Property templates for analysis
- Assists clients with remediation procedures (e.g., showing transactions are not owed)
- Develops exposure quantification models to calculate escheat exposures
- Assists with client refund review process
- Applies applicable tax consulting sub-specialties and consults with STS professionals when appropriate
- Ensures escheat engagement letters are adopted prior to engagement work and manages engagements
- Assists UP leadership with the development of consultative selling strategies
- Actively involved in relevant trade organizations and public speaking and networking events
- Routinely updates CRM entries
- Manages expectations of assigned clients
- Projects multiple clients and projects simultaneously with UP leadership
- Unclaimed Property Related Software
- Utilizes FSI Track, tax research databases and other tax-related software
- Maintains working knowledge of GL systems (SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards, AS/400, Epicor, etc.)
- Participates in learning and executing technology enhancements for the UP group
- Other duties as required
- May supervise the day-to-day workload of SALT Experienced Associates and Associates on assigned engagements and review work product
- Ensures SALT Experienced Associates, Associates and Interns are trained on all relevant software
- May evaluate performance and assist in developing goals and objectives to enhance professional development
- Delivers periodic performance feedback and completes evaluations for SALT Experienced Associates, Associates and Interns
- May act as Career Advisor to SALT Experienced Associates and Associates
Skills and Abilities
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, Economics or Finance, required
- Three (3) or more years of prior experience in tax, financial statement auditing or forensic accounting in a public accounting firm or in-house organization, required
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) or equivalent, preferred
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word, required
- Experience with Power BI, Alteryx, and other software, preferred
