Our service is part of the Human Resources Directorate, we provide occupational health and wellbeing support to both Trust staff and external customers and deliver health and wellbeing initiatives in line with corporate & national frameworks.

The postholder will be expected to work in our satellite department based at Cannock Hospital and on various external client sites as required so a car diver/owner is an essential requirement.

Main duties of the job

As a band 5 nurse in Occupational Health the main duties of the role will initially be to administer vaccinations and issue clearance to work for new starters to the to Trust.

As the role develops there will be opportunity to learn the requirements of undertaking a management referral clinic to support the managing attendance to work policy leading onto being responsible for a caseload whereby there will be a responsibility to assess fitness for work following episodes of absence and providing recommendations to managers with regard to reasonable adjustments and phased returns etc.

Job responsibilities

To be responsible for running routine clinics as directed by the Specialist Nurse Team Leader to cover the needs of the service.

To undertake routine work which is handled by the department daily e.g. giving telephone advice, health surveillance screening. S/he will deal with emergency situations e.g., sharps injuries.

To work as part of the multidisciplinary team to maintain effective communication with clients, manager and other professionals to ensure seamless service delivery.

To advise clients on current recommendations in relation to work environments, in line with occupational health regulations.

To provide a service which is client focused, referring to senior colleagues as appropriate.

To ensure that clinics meet the needs of the client e.g., they run to time, adequate stocks are maintained, they meet IP and SEQOHS standards.

To adhere to evidence-based practice when providing clinical advice in accordance with current occupational health practice. This may include routine health checks, infection prevention or health and safety guidance.

To liaise and work with specific expert groups e.g. infection prevention, virology etc. and support outbreak management as necessary.

To ensure clients receive continuity of care, referring to senior colleagues required.

To understand and provide vaccination programmes for various employee groups and promote awareness of the need to be protected against various infection hazards in the context of specific occupations.

To undertake pathology tests and have competent venipuncture skills in line with departmental protocols and liaise with laboratory staff e.g. virologists when appropriate.

To participate in the provision of site visits and management of nurse clinics for external contracts as requested by the OHWBS manager.

To ensure emergency equipment is maintained both within the department and on site visits e.g. emergency equipment such as anaphylaxis packs, oxygen in line with departmental protocols .

To undertake a risk assessment, taking the appropriate action to assess any member of staff following exposure to sharps/splash…
