GP Assistant

We are seeking a motivated and organised General Practice Assistant (GPA) to join our dedicated team. This role is key to supporting the effective delivery of patient care by providing both administrative and basic clinical support to GPs and nursing staff. The postholder will be based at Showell Park Health Centre but will need to attend monthly meetings with the PCN.

We have a dedicated, enthusiastic team of health care professionals comprising of different skills. The postholder will carry out administrative tasks, combined in some areas with basic clinical duties. They help to support GPs and contribute to the smooth running of appointments, improving patients experience in the surgery. The Postholder will support Doctors/Nurses in the implementation of individualised care and therapy programmes for patients.

To respond to patient queries and requests. A GPA will support the GP(s) smooth running of clinics by performing the more routine administration and clinical tasks on behalf of the GP freeing up their time to focus on the patient.

The post-holder will assist in promoting and maintaining their own and others' health, safety and security as defined in the practice Health & Safety Policy.

• Sorting all clinical post and prioritising for the GP in terms of actions. Signposting some post to others such as clinical pharmacist etc.
• Extracting all information from clinical letters that needs coding and adding to notes.
• Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow up appointments of patients.
• Preparing patients prior to going in to see the GP, taking a brief history and basic readings in readiness for the GP appointment.
• Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign such as insurance forms, mortgage, benefits agency forms etc.
• Explaining treatment procedures to patients.
• Helping the GP liaise with outside agencies e.g. getting an on‑call doctor on the phone to ask advice or arrange admission while the GP can continue with their consultation(s).
• Support the GP with immunisations/wound care.

We are a surgery who has over 7,000 patients with 5 Salaried GPs, 1 Nurse, 1 x HCA, 1 GPA and a great team of reception and admin staff. We are part of the Wolverhampton North Network PCN.

• Basic wound care including 2‑layer bandaging.

• Smoking Cessation and other Health Promotion Activities.
• To Assist in routine Child Health Surveillance.
• To assist in Chronic Disease Clinics, including monitoring inhaler technique and foot pulses.
• To perform NHS Health Checks and New patient checks.
• To provide examination of ears and ear syringing in line with protocol.
• To support delivery of clinical Quality & Outcomes Framework and QOF+.
• Assistance in the minor operating suite.
• Clinical fridge maintenance & cold chain.
• Smoking Cessation and other Health Promotion Activities.
• To Assist in routine Child Health Surveillance.
• To assist in Chronic Disease Clinics, including monitoring inhaler technique and foot pulses.

• To support delivery of clinical Quality & Outcomes Framework and QOF+.
• Answering the telephone, receiving and transmitting messages.
• Filing in forms.
• Liaise with other health care professionals.
• Ordering of equipment and other supplies.
• Filing and record keeping as necessary.
• To order, monitor and manage clinical supplies.
• To ensure clinical supplies are replaced/rotated across all clinical rooms.
• To support other Health Care Professionals in the various chronic disease management clinics.
• Any clinical tasks as deemed appropriate and supported by individual training.
• To record appropriate information in patient held records, clinic records and the practice computer system to comply with legal and professional requirements.
• To maintain confidentiality at all times.
• To comply with all appropriate practice policies, clinical practices and protocols.
• To comply with health and safety fire regulations and to report accidents/ incidents to the relevant colleagues as soon as practical.

Qualifications

• Works within General Practice.
• Service level role with patients.
• Working within a multidisciplinary team.
• Qualified to NVQ level 2 in Health and Social Care.
• Basic knowledge of English and Mathematics.

• Experience of working in primary care.
• Experience of working in a GP practice.
