We require an experienced Environmental Health Officer to join the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Environmental Health Service.

The Environmental Health Service forms part of the Commercial Regulation Service, alongside Trading Standards and Licensing. The Services work together in multi-disciplinary teams focused on improving environmental and commercial standards in the city.

As a Senior Environmental Health Officer you will get involved in a diverse range of case work, supporting the Environmental Health team to deliver core Environmental Protection services. You will be working with a team of officers that undertake a wide range of duties including the inspection of food premises, health and safety inspections, inspection of animal welfare establishments, investigation and control of noise pollution and statutory nuisances, infectious disease investigations, inspection of permitted processes as well as consultations in relation to licensed premises and planning applications.

Responsibilities
  • Process applications for and issue environmental permits
  • Undertake inspections of permitted processes
  • Investigate complaints of statutory nuisance arising on commercial premises and events such as noise, odour, and bonfires taking enforcement action where necessary
  • Assess the potential environmental impacts of planning and premises licence applications
  • Respond to requests for environmental information

The opportunity to assist with other Environmental Health functions relating to commercial properties and infectious diseases may also occur.

Qualifications

We are looking for an individual who has previous experience in the field of Environmental Protection, in particular dealing with environmental permits and investigations of statutory nuisance. You will have first rate knowledge of legislation and issues concerning environmental protection. You must be an excellent communicator who is able to work using your own initiative, as well as working as part of a larger team and with partner organisations.

A degree or diploma in environmental health or equivalent qualification is required for this post. We would welcome applications from candidates holding the Postgraduate Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control or the IOA Certificate of Competence in Environmental Noise Measurement.

The position can periodically involve working outside normal weekday hours, attending committees, and representing the service.

Pay Award

Local Government Employers and trade unions are currently in negotiations to agree the 2026/2027 annual pay offer for employees. Once pay settlement is agreed this will be backdated to 1 April 2026.

Working Arrangements

All council roles are allocated to either a fixed, field or flexible work style. Some roles are agile which enable and empower employees to maximise their performance and productivity, whilst maintaining a healthy work life balance. Roles with a fixed workstyle work in a fixed permanent council location. Roles with a field workstyle are usually allocated where employees are required to be out working in the community with a minimum requirement for 'touch down' space at any council location.
