Senior Welding Engineer

Salary: £60,000 - £80,000 p.a
EMBS is working in partnership with a market leading, reputable precision engineering business that is currently seeking a Senior Welding Engineer to join their team on a permanent basis, located at their site near Wolverhampton.
Our client specialises in the manufacture of bespoke, turnkey projects for highly regulated industries including Nuclear & Defence.
This is a business‑critical appointment, providing technical authority and operational leadership across all welding activities within a highly regulated manufacturing environment.
This role offers the chance to take full ownership of the Welding Engineering function, lead ISO 3834 accreditation at comprehensive level, and drive the development of robotic welding capability within a new state‑of‑the‑art facility.

As Senior Welding Engineer, you will act as the Responsible Weld Coordinator, holding named responsibility on ISO 3834 certification and ensuring full compliance with nuclear and associated regulatory standards.
You will provide technical leadership across projects, production and quality functions, while mentoring and developing a small but evolving welding team.
Key responsibilities include:- Acting as Technical Authority for all welding‑related matters across projects and production
- Leading weld design reviews, in‑service performance considerations, manufacturability and inspection requirements
- Developing and maintaining the Welding Quality Management System in line with EN ISO 3834 and EN 1090
- Producing and approving WPS, PQR and maintaining WPQ records
- Managing welder qualifications and subcontractor approvals
- Conducting root cause analysis and driving continuous improvement initiatives
- Embedding welding governance within broader management systems and regulatory frameworks
- Leading audit programmes and ensuring certification compliance
- Supporting QA/QC and customer verification requirements
- Managing the Welding Management System budget
- Mentoring two junior welding technicians, strengthening technical capability and team cohesion
- Driving the development and implementation of robotic welding technologies within a new facility
This position requires more than technical excellence. You will combine deep welding expertise with strong leadership and an operational mindset, ensuring production continuity while upholding the highest standards of compliance.
You will bring:- Recognised Welding Qualification (EWT or EWE)
- Eligibility to act as Responsible Weld Coordinator at Comprehensive Level under ISO 3834
- Minimum 5+ years' experience within highly regulated industries such as Nuclear (ideal), Aerospace, Defence, Oil & Gas or Rail
- Strong working knowledge of EN ISO 3834 and EN 1090
- Demonstrable experience of welding process audit, verification and documentation control
- Deep understanding of high‑integrity welding processes within heavy engineering
- Experience developing or implementing new welding technologies, ideally robotic welding
- Strong leadership and mentoring capability
- Clear communication skills and structured organisational approach
- A practical, production‑focused mindset
A background in metallurgy would be advantageous.
