As an HLTA in an SEN setting, you will play a vital role in supporting pupils with complex learning needs, helping to create a safe, nurturing and structured learning environment. You will work closely with teachers and multidisciplinary teams to deliver engaging lessons, support personalised learning plans, and promote both academic and emotional development.
You may be required to lead whole‑class sessions, cover lessons in the teacher's absence, and deliver targeted interventions tailored to individual pupil needs.
Key Responsibilities- Deliver pre‑planned lessons to classes or groups in the absence of the teacher
- Support the planning, delivery and assessment of differentiated learning activities
- Lead small group and one‑to‑one interventions
- Support pupils with a range of SEN including ASD, ADHD, SEMH, SLD, PMLD and communication needs
- Implement and support EHCP targets and individual behaviour plans
- Use positive behaviour strategies and de‑escalation techniques
- Support pupils with emotional regulation and social development
- Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, therapists and support staff
- Monitor pupil progress and provide feedback to teaching staff
- Ensure safeguarding, health and safety procedures are followed at all times
- Hold HLTA status or have equivalent experience in an SEN setting
- Have recent experience working with children or young people with SEN
- Be confident supporting learning at a whole‑class level
- Have a patient, resilient and compassionate approach
- Demonstrate strong behaviour management and communication skills
- Be flexible and adaptable to different SEN environments
- Hold an enhanced DBS on the Update Service or be willing to obtain one
