This post will provide the opportunity for the post holder to access specialist clinical sessions appropriate to their development needs and participate in clinical work. The remainder of the job plan each week will consist of general middle grade duties on ophthalmology clinics and theatres; allowing the successful candidates to maintain their skills in Ophthalmology.

Main duties of the job
  • To support the Ophthalmology Directorate at New Cross Hospital.
  • Outpatient workload duties involve new, results and elective operating theatre lists.
  • Research, education, audit and continuing professional development.
    • Take responsibility for continuing professional education in accordance with guidelines set out by the appropriate college/faculty/professional body.
    • Actively participate in research and audit programmes in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
    • Work in collaboration with colleagues in developing skills to provide new ways of working across different professions.
  • In conjunction with colleagues, ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.
  • Duties will involve cover breast clinics and elective operating theatre lists. The post holder will be responsible for the clinical care of patients under supervision as necessary.
  • The post holder will be responsible for the maintenance of proper case records and investigations on patients, and correspondence with General Practitioners and others as required.
  • General elements:
    • Participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care.
    • Be able to work flexibly, and cross cover for colleagues.
    • Take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.
    • Contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development.
    • Contribute to the research and development of the department.
    • Provide cover for colleagues as appropriate and in accordance with local Trust arrangements and Trust Policy.

Clinical audit/departmental teaching

The Trust has a supportive environment and is still small enough for personal contact with colleagues from a wide variety of disciplines. There is a multidisciplinary mortality and morbidity meeting held every month.

The appointment is a whole-time appointment. The appointment will be to the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. The post holder will be managerially accountable to the Clinical Director of Ophthalmology.

Approval for leave is at the discretion of the relevant Consultants and is department on continuity of patient care.

Applicants should, by the date of commencement, have registered with the General Medical Council.

The appointed doctor accepts that they will perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at Consultant request, though juniors will not be required to undertake this work for prolonged periods on a regular basis.

You are expected to cover the absence of colleagues on study and annual leave during the daytime. The annual Leave entitlement is 27 days plus 8 bank holidays days per annum, pro rata for contracts of less than 12 months.

  • FRCOphth part 1
  • FRCOphth Part 2 and 3
Experience
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in Ophthalmology and evidence of commitment to specialty
Skills
  • Ability to participate in either first or second on call supported by Consultant Ophthalmologist
