The Tooling Designer utilizes CAD software extensively and occasionally hand sketches to design welding, machining, and assembly fixtures for manufacturing.
EXPECTATIONS- Continually improve the manufacturability of products via innovative and simplistic tooling designed with limited direction and supervision.
- Work with product engineering, manufacturing engineering, and manufacturing to design cost effective, efficient tooling and fixturing.
- Solve manufacturing and fixturing problems and make improvements by soliciting and collaborating with customers, other employees, and suppliers, and working together to provide the best solutions.
- Continually strive to find better ways to complete tasks and be the best in the industry.
- Design fixtures and tooling in Pro Engineer/CREO and make detailed 2D prints of all components.
- Fabricate or modify custom equipment, fixtures, and tooling for use in manufacturing.
- Introduce tooling and fixturing designs to custom fabrication and production and train employees on its proper use.
- Manage portions of major projects independently. Maintain an up-to-date written list of assigned tasks and communicate with engineering and manufacturing management to set priorities.
- Solicit input from individuals and teams on current and future manufacturing tooling and fixturing improvements.
- Complete related documentation, proposals, and write reports.
- Provide technical assistance to tooling builders during the production of tooling and fixturing.
- Cost justify various tooling designs.
- Maintain work area in a clean and orderly fashion and conform to all quality and safety procedures.
The individual must have a high school diploma or GED. Advanced education in engineering or manufacturing or three years experience in manufacturing required. The position requires knowledge and basic skills in the areas of machining, fabrication, welding, assembly, and CAD software. Pro Engineer/CREO experience is preferred.
