Position: Elementary School Principal, 4K-5
Location: Bayfield

Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the District Administrator, the Elementary School Principal provides visionary leadership and day-to-day supervision of a K‑5 elementary school located in Bayfield, WI, a K‑5 elementary school located in La Pointe, WI, and a district 4K program to ensure high‑quality teaching and learning for all students. This role is responsible for leading and continuously improving a universally designed, standards‑aligned instructional program that promotes equitable access, academic growth, and student achievement in accordance with Board of Education policies, administrative procedures, and applicable state and federal laws.

The Principal serves as a strong instructional leader with demonstrated expertise in universal instruction and curriculum development, guiding teachers in effective instructional practices, data‑informed decision‑making, and inclusive classroom strategies. The position includes leadership in program development and improvement, comprehensive professional learning, and ongoing coaching and support for teachers and staff to strengthen instructional capacity and student outcomes. The Principal also is committed to engaging families and communities within our district service area.

Essential

Functions
  • Coordinates the work of school staff and district program leaders to develop and implement instructional programs and teaching practices. Supervises and evaluates all elementary teaching staff and literacy interventionists using the Educator Effectiveness framework.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and works with teaching staff to modify instructional methods to fit students’ needs, including students with special needs.
  • Coordinates with the central office in recruitment and selection of employees specific to the elementary schools.
  • Organizes and conducts regular meetings with elementary staff for continuing development of instructional techniques, social and emotional support, and general well‑being of students and staff.
  • Involves staff in the evaluation of programs and the planning of new programs.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students’ education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Supports and leads the integration of Circle of Courage.
  • Understands and upholds budgets pertinent to the successful operation of both elementary schools in partnership with the administration and district finance department.
Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the District Administrator and Board of Education.

Equipment

Uses standard office equipment such as personal computer, printer, copier, fax machine, telephone, and cell phone.

Travel Requirements

Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required, including all‑season travel to La Pointe elementary school and to the district 4K programs located in Red Cliff, WI and Bayfield, WI.

Work Schedule

Standard administrator work schedule as set forth in the Administrative Unit Contract.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

Works in standard office and inside and outside school building environments.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiating instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of elementary school curriculum and concepts.
  • Knowledge of State of Wisconsin literacy standards and requirements.
  • Knowledge of best practices in administration, program evaluation, and staff supervision.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education.
  • Knowledge and experience working with Ojibwe families and tribal communities.
  • Ability to use computer network systems, software applications, and virtual learning platforms as needed.
  • Ability to develop and implement projects.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and manage conflicting time constraints.
  • Ability to engage in self‑evaluation with regard to leadership, performance, and professional growth.
