Job Summary
The Directional Drill Locator is responsible for locating and guiding horizontal directional drilling (HDD) operations to safely and accurately install underground utilities such as fiber, conduit, and other infrastructure. This role works closely with the Drill Operator to ensure proper bore path, depth, and alignment while maintaining safety and production standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate locating equipment to track drill head location, depth, and pitch
- Communicate real-time guidance to the Drill Operator
- Read and interpret bore profiles, prints, and utility maps
- Verify and maintain proper bore depth and alignment
- Perform potholing and expose utilities as needed
- Identify and avoid existing underground utilities
- Conduct pre-job safety meetings and job site assessments
- Assist with setup and breakdown of drilling equipment
- Maintain accurate job documentation and bore logs
- Ensure compliance with company safety policies and OSHA standards
- Work in all outdoor weather conditions
- Previous experience as a Directional Drill Locator or similar role
- Experience using locating systems (e.g., DCI, Subsite, Digi Trak, Falcon)
- Ability to read and interpret prints and bore plans
- Strong communication skills with drill crews and supervisors
- Knowledge of underground utility construction practices
- Ability to work in physically demanding outdoor environments
- Ability to lift 50-100 lbs and perform manual labor as required
- Valid driver's license (CDL preferred but not required unless specified)
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification
- Experience in telecom, fiber, gas, water, or electric utilities
- Confined space training
- Knowledge of local 811/One Call procedures
- Outdoor work in varying weather conditions
- Standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting regularly
- Exposure to construction equipment, noise, and uneven terrain
