Heavy Equipment Operator, Construction Labor / Trades
Performs intermediate skilled trades work operating heavy equipment required for various utility maintenance and repair operations, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Senior Crew Coordinator.
Operates all equipment required for water and sewer repairs and installations.
Maneuvers all materials; installs shoring devices; ensures accurate placement of trench boxes.
Removes and replaces all materials excavated from ditch lines; excavates around other utilities; ensures compaction meets state standards.
Ensures safety precautions are taken at every excavation.
Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and department policies, practices, and procedures; thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and departmental legal guides, recommendations, best practices, ordinances, and laws; comprehensive knowledge of industry standard and department specific equipment; thorough knowledge of blueprints and maps; some knowledge of standard office software; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages;
ability to perform duties in adverse weather conditions; ability to troubleshoot problems; ability to maneuver and install safety equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
High school diploma or GED and extensive experience in operating construction equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical RequirementsThis work requires the occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires sitting, tasting or smelling and pushing or pulling and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements;
vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities;
work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration, frequently requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to the risk of electrical shock and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment;
work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant).
- CDL Class A permit required upon hire.
- Within 1 year of hire:
- OSHA Workplace Safety training
- Valid commercial driver's license with Class A endorsement.
