Protection Officer (Part-Time), Reynolda House Museum of American Art
Job Description
Summary:
Provides protection to the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, guests, and staff from criminal activity, fire, safety hazards, and other dangerous situations. Monitors activities within the museum, conducts roving patrols, and responds to incidents as directed. Responsibilities involve dynamic interpersonal interaction with visitors, staff, and vendors during normal museum hours as well as special functions and after‑hours and weekend events.
Demonstrates approachability and confidence, and makes all feel welcome as a reflection of the Reynolda brand.
- Maintain knowledge of current policies and procedures to protect the collection, staff, and visitors.
- Actively monitor all building areas to ensure the safety and security of the collection, staff, and guests and take action as required.
- Detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel via the chain of command.
- Protect the collection from unauthorized tampering, handling, defacing, touching, or theft.
- Respond to fire alarms, intrusion alarms, and panic alarms.
- Respond to medical emergencies and administer aid as required.
- Receive reports of and respond to security, safety, and incident issues, investigate and complete detailed incident reports, and make prompt notifications as required.
- Respond appropriately to guest conflicts as the first level of conflict management.
- Regulate and control traffic through gallery spaces during regular museum operations and special events.
- Assist in the evacuation of the museum in the event of an emergency that threatens life or property in accordance with current emergency procedures; ensure security of the area.
- Conduct opening and closing building inspections.
- High school graduate or G.E.D. with two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to successfully complete security training, first aid/CPR training, and other training as assigned by the Director of Security.
- Ability to use a computer for multiple functions including report writing, email communication, timekeeping, and scheduling.
- Ability to work flexible shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays (weekend availability required).
- Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare accurate and detailed reports.
- Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or other emergency services.
- Works under general supervision.
- Reports to the Security Manager.
Performs bending, climbing, crouching, kneeling, reaching from ground level to overhead, pushing and pulling up to 20 pounds; must be able to visually observe and monitor museum building, grounds, security cameras, and other related equipment; will be subjected to long periods of standing or walking. May be called upon to physically assist guests in an emergency or evacuation.
