Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Utility Technician
Under immediate supervision performs routine technical and responsible skilled work in the operation and maintenance of sewage treatment plant equipment.
- Makes regular tours of plant and checks engines, generators, pumps, aerators, settling tanks, digesters, filters, clarifiers and other equipment for proper functioning.
- Records readings from meters and blowers, valves and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions.
- Bleeds gas liners; collects samples of raw sewage, primary treatment effluent and grit for laboratory analysis.
- Performs specific laboratory tests; skims grease from settling tanks; pumps sludge; cleans bar screens; disposes of sand, trash, and rags; cleans and services pumps, motors and other equipment.
- Makes minor or emergency repairs; reports defects to maintenance personnel; substitutes for senior operator in his/her absence.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma and some experience in operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment in an industrial setting.
Must have a valid North Carolina's driver license. A math test must be scheduled and taken by the applicant. Possession or ability to obtain a valid Grade II Wastewater Operator certificate from the State of North Carolina required. Shift work required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This work requires exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking and lifting and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling and pushing or pulling; work has standard vision requirements;
vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities;
work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to blood borne pathogens, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and wearing a self contained breathing apparatus; may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
