Overview
Medical Instrument Technician (Ultrasound) – GS‑0649‑08‑09 at Defense Health Agency. This position serves as an Ultrasound Technologist in a major Medical Treatment Facility (MTF), independently performing complex and highly specialized procedures for the Radiology Department.
The role is located at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where the facility is co‑located with Fayetteville. It offers a range of community amenities and convenient access to I‑95.
ResponsibilitiesAs a Medical Instrument Technician (Ultrasound) you will:
- Perform a wide variety of complex ultrasound examinations of human patients to aid in the diagnosis of disease or injury.
- Explain the ultrasound examining process to the patient.
- Select, set up, adjust, and operate ultrasound equipment.
- Extend and/or modify the procedure to ensure full and accurate information.
- Train radiologists, physician assistants, students, and other personnel in ultrasound principles, procedures, capabilities, techniques, and equipment.
- Perform operator‑level maintenance and care of equipment.
- Take backup call as required.

Qualifications For GS‑08- Specialized
Experience:
One year of experience performing a variety of ultrasound examinations of human patients (e.g., obstetrical, extremities, transvaginal, deep vein thrombosis) and setting up, adjusting, or maintaining ultrasound diagnostic equipment. - OR
Education: One and a half years of graduate‑level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Sonography or Radiology. - OR
Combination of
Education and Experience:
A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year by 9. Add the two percentages. The total must equal at least 100%.
For GS‑09
- Specialized
Experience:
One year of experience performing a variety of ultrasound examinations of human patients (e.g., obstetrical, extremities, transvaginal, deep vein thrombosis) and setting up, adjusting, or maintaining ultrasound diagnostic equipment; and performing high‑level disinfectant sterilization procedures such as Trophon. - OR
Education: Two full years of graduate‑level education or a master’s degree in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Sonography or Radiology. - OR
Combination of
Education and Experience:
A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. The calculation method is the same as for GS‑08.
