Location:

Winston, NC (Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center – Sterile Processing Services)

Salary: $22.50 – $33.75 per hour

Employment:
Full‑time, 40 hours per week, variable schedule

Job Summary

Ensures that the department has everything it needs to operate efficiently and effectively. Ensures instruments and supplies are readily available for processing through purchasing and coordinating with vendors for loaners and trials. Oversees instrument repairs, transfers between facilities, and instrument tracking.

Essential Functions
  • Coordinated the repair of instruments with appropriate vendors and maintained a log for tracking items set off‑site.
  • Coordinated the maintenance of instrument sets by assessing surgical case schedules and determining which instruments could be removed from circulation.
  • Coordinated the procurement of and return of loaner, vendor, and trial instrument sets.
  • Ordered new and replacement supplies and instruments based on inventory, par levels, iShare requests, and at the direction of the Manager of Sterile Processing while striving to adhere to departmental budgets.
  • Assisted with resolving product and/or instrument recalls as quickly as possible to promote patient care.
  • Maintained the department's instrument tracking system by entering new instruments into the system and building count sheets.
  • Collaborated with SPD Liaisons to ensure sets were available and complete.
  • Used excellent communication skills when discussing instrument availability with SPD Supervisors, SPD Liaisons, and/or OR Clinical Coordinators.
  • Was an expert in all aspects of the sterile processing cycle and provided guidance and education to SPD.
  • Assisted with special projects and inter‑departmental committees as needed.
  • Assisted with Sterile Processing staffing as needed.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Proficient communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to order instruments via People Soft
Work Environment
  • Clean, well‑lit, comfortable environment.
  • Subject to varying and unpredictable situations.
  • Subject to many interruptions.
  • Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.
  • Moderate noise level.
  • Possible exposure to cleaning agents.
  • Subject to hazards of flammable, explosive gases.
  • May be subject to burns.
  • Exposure to hazards of steam and heat.
Education / Experience

High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience

Two years' experience in sterile processing required.

Licensure, Certification, and Registration

Certification as a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) or other sterile processing certification required.

Certification as a Surgical Instrument Specialist required within one year of hire.
