- School/Department Information: The Department of Police and Public Safety is responsible for law enforcement, criminal investigations, parking enforcement, parking fine collection, emergency first response, community policing, security escorts, security surveys, motorist assists, educational presentations, and special event services on the campus of UNC School of the Arts.
This description covers the duties and responsibilities of officers in the Police Trainee and Police Officer bands and includes Police Trainee, Police Officer I, Police Officer II, and Police Officer III. Selection to and movement between the different levels is outlined in Police Department General Order 100-8. Positions in this class perform law enforcement work at a University campus or other State facility.
With full powers of arrest, positions enforce the laws of the State and the United States Government. Positions have law enforcement authority ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations within a limited geographic jurisdiction. Work involves patrolling an assigned area for response to complaints or calls and for detection of violations in the enforcement of State laws and applicable regulations.
Duties include apprehending observed violators, investigating violations or complaints, collecting and preserving evidence with chain of custody, testifying in court proceedings, and performing related work. Positions may serve as a patrol officer, detective squad member, crime prevention officer, or lead officer on an assigned shift.
Monday through Friday and some weekends may be required for the trainee. The academy is a full-time program conducted over 17 weeks and consists of approximately 680 hours of training. Class sessions are Monday through Friday starting at 8 a.m., with the schedule varying by training topic. Occasional night training is required while enrolled in the daytime session. Typically, a 12-hour shift, including every other weekend, does not switch between day and night shifts.
