This Engineer position is foundational to the work of the IL Program and the VR program in the area of assessment and evaluation of residences, vehicles, and work sites in order to determine what modifications are needed to allow individuals with significant disabilities to live independently and individuals with disabilities of varying degrees of severity to achieve suitable employment. A continued vacancy will prevent timely service delivery and increase the workload for other engineers in the region who are assisting with providing services due to no dedicated engineer for this position.
Responsibilities- Collaborate and communicate with stakeholders such as Vocational Rehabilitation and Independent Living Counselors, individuals with disabilities, vendors, and contractors.
- Conduct site visits to consumers' homes, schools, and/or worksites to assess factors, barriers and determine engineering needs.
- Document recommendations and specifications for safe and cost-effective engineering solutions that may include adaptive equipment and devices, assistive technology, residence modifications, vehicle modifications, and worksite modifications/accommodations.
- Maintain current knowledge of rehabilitation engineering related best practices, products, services, and vendors.
- Provide technical assistance for internal team and interagency projects when requested.
- Knowledge of practical applications of engineering or architectural science and technology.
- Knowledge of or experience with producing written reports, recommendations, and plans.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with internal and external partners to accomplish goals.
- Experience in construction and/or home modification as well as electromechanical design.
- Knowledge of adaptive driving technologies and vehicle modification processes.
- Knowledge of disabilities and related functional issues.
- Knowledge of adaptive equipment, devices, and technologies available for individuals with disabilities.
- Ability to design and fabricate customized engineering solutions when needed.
- Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
- May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
- Driver’s license required due to extensive travel within the region.
