Under general supervision, performs professional engineering work related to the construction, inspection and maintenance of roadway resurfacing, sidewalk repairs, and guardrail installation to ensure safety, structural integrity, and compliance with regulatory standards.
Responsibilities- Serves as Project Field Engineer for contracted services such as sidewalk repairs, guardrail installations, and roadway resurfacing.
- Develops and manages procurement of contracted services for field related work projects.
- Serves as a liaison between consultants, contractors, other municipal departments and agencies, as well as the general public.
- Reviews designs, plans, specifications, construction cost estimates, schedules, and other items prepared by consulting engineers for accuracy and completeness.
- Coordinates construction bid process with engineers, contractors, City/County Purchasing Department staff, etc. including preparation of bid documents, pre-bid conferences, bid openings, and pre-construction meetings.
- Reviews and approves submittals, invoices, and payment applications by engineers and contractors.
- Coordinates with contractors, consultants, and other departments to ensure project objectives and timelines are met. Monitors construction sites to verify work quality and adherence to project specifications and safety regulations are met.
- Estimate plans for bidding & construction of services, administers contracts, inspect the work of contractors, and approve provisional payments.
- Reviews and manages project financial information to keep projects on budget and on schedule.
- Knowledge of/experience in open enclosed drainage systems.
- Does related work as assigned.
Bachelor's degree with coursework in civil engineering, or related field and equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of modern civil engineering methods and techniques; through knowledge of land and engineering survey systems, methods and techniques; thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of engineering drafting; possess excellent communication skills; knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and position specific software; ability to effectively work with City Officials, employees, contractors, State and Federal Officials and the general public; ability to prepare technical reports.
Physical RequirementsThis work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle to feel, frequently requires sitting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, stopping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is requires for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word;
hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work is generally in moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
- Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of North Carolina or Engineering Intern in pursuit of North Carolina Professional Engineer registration highly preferred.
- Valid US Driver's License
- CAD and GIS experience preferred.
