Automotive Technician
Forsyth County's General Services Department has an opening for an Automotive Technician. This hands‑on technician works on a wide variety of vehicles, including fleet vehicles, emergency vehicles, and specialty vehicles. The role involves performing preventive maintenance, tire changes, engine replacements, vehicle upfits, and other repair tasks.
Work Schedule- 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday
- On‑call work as needed
- Uniform provided
- Safety shoes and tool stipends offered to qualified employees
- Ability to estimate time and materials needed to complete a job
- Ability to diagnose causes of defective operation and perform major and minor overhauls on a variety of equipment
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees
- Ability to follow written direction in specialized vehicle manuals
- Considerable knowledge of repair tools and special testing equipment
- Considerable knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine theory, care, and operation
- Lifting requirements: 50–100 lbs occasionally, 25–50 lbs frequently, or 10–20 lbs constantly
- Valid driver’s license required
- Must have NC Vehicle Inspection License (or be able to obtain within 60 days of employment)
- Current ASE certifications preferred
- A higher education level may be considered a substitution for experience requirements
- Completion of a one‑year technical school program in automotive repair and at least two years of responsible automotive repair work on a variety of vehicles
- OR graduation from high school or GED and at least three years of relevant experience
- Inspect, service, and repair a variety of vehicles; may specialize in sheriff’s vehicles and other county vehicles
- Inspect and diagnose operation of gasoline and diesel automotive equipment to determine repair needs
- Conduct complete tune‑ups, including installing plugs, condensers, coils, rotors, distributor caps, wiring, and setting proper timing
- Overhaul brakes by honing wheels and master cylinders, turning drums, installing new linings, and bleeding the system
- Repair or install doors, glass, locks, shock absorbers, sirens, tires, and other equipment
- Disassemble engines and perform general engine overhaul work
- Drive a wrecker to respond to disabled or wrecked county vehicles
- Perform N.C. vehicle safety inspections
- Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles as scheduled
- Overhaul transmissions, differentials, cooling and fuel systems, and make simple body repairs
- Maintain required licenses, including a valid driver’s license in good standing and DOT standards compliance if required
