New hires - $16.50/hour
Second year - $17.50/hour
Third year - $18.50/hour
Work hours for this position will be Monday through Thursday 6:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with occasional Fridays from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Characteristics of Class:
Seasonal Highway Maintenance Laborer will perform general physical duties in the maintenance of the County's highways. Seasonal Maintenance Laborer reports to full-time Highway Maintenance Workers and/or the Highway Maintenance Superintendent.
Example of Duties:
Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples listed in their relative order of importance, include all duties which may be found in positions in this class.
* Crack sealing and patching of bituminous pavements using hot oils and asphaltic materials.
* Cutting grass and brush along roadsides using mowers and hand tools.
* Pothole patching.
* Acts as a flag person in highway maintenance work zones.
* Any other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Any combination of training and experience providing the following knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Persons in this position will, at times, work in weather extremes including, heat, humidity, and cold. Working in highway traffic zones using hot and/or caustic materials will be required. Persons must be capable of occasional lifting of 50 pounds from ground to waist level with frequent lifting of 25 pounds. Good sight and hearing acuity is required. This position must comply with all Federal, State, County, and departmental safety and health rules, policies and procedures.
For Pre-Employment:
* Eighteen years of age or older.
* High school graduate or equivalent G.E.D.
* Valid drivers license with no serious driving violations nor repetitive accident histories.
* Experience using various hand tools and small power tools.
* High level of safety awareness.
* Good hand/eye coordination, reflexes, and manual dexterity.
* Background or exposure to farming, construction, logging, outdoor maintenance, landscape work, or previous highway maintenance work is highly desirable.
Classification Levels:
Seasonal Highway Maintenance Laborer I
* Performs duties and meets abilities, requirements, and qualifications as specified above.
Seasonal Highway Maintenance Laborer II
* Performs the duties of a level I laborer but works with independence and with minimum levels of training.
* Meets abilities, requirements, and qualifications of a level I laborer plus one season of experience as a Highway Maintenance Laborer.
Seasonal Highway Maintenance Laborer III
* Performs the duties of a level II laborer plus occasionally serves as lead worker in providing direction to other seasonal laborers.
* Meets abilities, requirements, and qualifications of a level I laborer plus two or more seasons of experience as a Highway Maintenance Laborer.
