About the Organization

The National Diabetes Trust is Canada’s largest charitable clothing and small household good collection service. With more than 5,000 donation bins and an active home pick‑up service in communities across Canada (excluding Quebec), we collect unwanted gently used clothing and household items to raise much‑needed funds for Diabetes Canada. Each year the program diverts more than 100 million pounds of items from landfill sites nationwide, making a difference for life‑altering charitable programs and helping the environment.

Position Overview

Hourly Wage: $19.56

Part‑Time

Up to 29 hours per week

As a Charitable Donations Pick‑up Driver, you will report to the Operations Manager and drive established routes gathering donated items from customers’ homes and donation bins, then deliver them to Corporate Partners and storage facilities. A consistent schedule will be developed in collaboration with operational needs.

Responsibilities
  • Promote the mission of the National Diabetes Trust to the public and volunteers.
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of the organization’s goals, programs and structure.
  • Operate vehicles in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Conduct pre‑ and post‑trip inspections.
  • Complete and submit all required paperwork daily.
  • Maintain and submit Hours‑of‑Service logs.
  • Always carry proof of a valid driver’s licence, vehicle registration, Commercial Vehicle Operator Registration/National Safety Code registration and associated documentation.
  • Check in with dispatch at the beginning, mid‑day and at the end of the route.
  • Provide a message card to each donor.
  • Properly log all assigned pick‑ups.
  • Unload merchandise as instructed.
  • Return all equipment to the office at the end of each day.
  • Report route discrepancies to dispatch.
  • Ensure that only authorized personnel ride inside the truck.
  • Participate in all required driving‑related NDT education and updates.
  • Perform additional duties as required to support Operations.
About You
  • Grade 12 education or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to read maps and handle 10‑50 lbs loads.
  • Ability to drive a 3‑ton (16‑ft) straight truck.
  • Strong organisational skills and route‑planning ability.
  • Professional, positive public image.
  • Effective communication skills with diverse people.
  • Calm assistance to upset clients and maintain a professional attitude in stressful situations.
  • Ability to understand and follow written or verbal instructions.
  • Good command of the English language.
  • Superior customer service skills.
  • Must hold a Full Class 5 and/or G licence (or higher) for passenger cars or light trucks.
  • Minimum 5 years of actual driving experience at the licence level (2 years if professionally trained).
  • Clean driver abstract, less than 21 days old, with no violations or accidents within the last 3 years.
